A Starter Motor Confusion
I was replacing the starter motor for my 95 Max. Initially, I thought was a charging system issue but it turned out was the starter motor went bad. Anyway, while I was contacting Napa and AdvancedAuto for replacement. I was told the car should have either 8 or 10 teeth starter. So to be sure, I took the old starter motor off and counted that it has 11 teeth. The parts # read as 23300-02Y900R on it. Somehow this part number shows in both stores as the starter for 2000-2001.
I am a bit puzzling. I have the car from the beginning, and I knww that it was Nissan dealer replaced the starter motor 10-14 year ago. Could it possible the 11 teeth starter from 2000 is also compatible to 4th gen Maxima?
In the end, I did pick up a replacement with 11 teeth. Just to match up the old one that I took off, and it seems to be working fine. But I am still curious what is the right tooth count of the 95 max starter motor.

When I had my '95, I had starting issues that could no longer be resolved by re-greasing. I purchased an 11 tooth starter from a member on this site, which was pulled from a 2000-2001 motor. It worked great - gave me quicker starts than my original one.

If you want the right tooth count buy a new starter from Nissan. I've done several starters on my '97 all remans and I couldn't tell you what is in there now as far as teeth count goes. The point, they all worked until they didn't for electrical reasons not bendix engagement. You will be fine.

The original starter in the 4th gen had 8 teeth. There were starting problems and it was found to be that the engine was not cranking over fast enough to get a good pulse from the CKPS[POS] crankshaft sensor. Nissan upped the number of teeth on the starter pinon gear to crank the engine faster. There were 8, then 9, then 10 teeth before 11 was determined to be the best number.
Do not get a starter with less than 11 teeth. This is an upgrade that you do not want to go backwards on.
