Any tricks on reattaching parking brake cable to the rear caliper after replacing?

96 I30 automatic

I had to replace my rear calipers due to rust and the common seizing. However, I could only reattach one of the parking brake cables. The left cable I was not able to put back on the caliper!

I used Napa Total Eclipse calipers, which are the same as Cardone Ultra but with a black coating instead of silver. They are awesome calipers, and I have used Napa Eclipse on other cars, and the coating does hold up, and they haven;t rusted even a year after.

Unfortunately, the calipers do not come with that bracket that the handbrake cable attaches to, so I had to transfer the old ones to the new calipers. And the spring thing that controls the e-brake is not coated, so it will rust, which is why I want to attach the cable, so that it will be used (non-use of the parking brake is responsible for many rear caliper failures, because the mechanism seizes)

All four brakes work in terms of regular brakes coming to a stop from driving, so that is good.

But I only have one parking brake rather than two. It does hold the car reasonably well, especially for only one of them working! And it is better than what I had before, zero parking brakes! My car is automatic, so it's not quite as vital as it would be in a manual, but still, I'd like both of them to be working if at all possible.

So, does anyone on here have any special advice on getting the cable back on?

First of all, loosen the boot around the parking brake handle. Then loosen the tensioner. That takes a 10mm deep socket, as I recall. You want to create as much slack as possible.

Next, attach a vice grip to the portion of the rear caliper part where the cable is supposed to attach.
Force that forward. The park brake cable should fit then.

Once that is done on both sides, tighten the nut under the park brake handle. Adjust to your preference. You want no drag when the handle is down. You also want the cable to become tight enough while in the up position to hold the car on a slope, or enough to stop the car without use of the regular brake system.
