How does the repair shop do it??????

Say you fail emissions and the shop tells you its code P0174 and they replace your O2 sensor which they say will take care of the code. How are they able to clear the code and get the car to pass the emissions test without driving it for a hundred or so miles? What their trick to get all the systems to read READY????

they arent, once the codes are reset, the car must go through the proper drive cycle(s) in order for the obd2 monitors to ready. Although thats probably closer to like 20 miles than it is to 100. There is no other (legal) way to do it, and the illegal way requires software they probably dont have and almost certainly wouldnt use for a stranger, lest they get slammed by the EPA.

I am not sure in what state you are, but here in TX you have inspection stations which do ONLY inspections, so there is no car mechanic who is trying to sell you anything ;-)

Connecticut. Car needs to be older than 1994 to be emissions exempt.
My car is a 1997.

Oh man move to Alabama. They accepted a picture of my VIN as proof that I owned the car and then just registered it sans inspection. LOL.

Quite the change from MD - moved to Huntsville a year ago.
