Brake Light Switch Keeps Breaking

Hi

I have a 1998 Maxima and I am on the 4th brake switch in less then six months. The first three were from AutoZone, and the current one is from Pep-Boys, they all failed in the on potion resulting in a dead battery and the metal parts inside the switch getting hot enough to melt the plastic casting.

Will getting a brake switch from Nissan be what is need to fix this problem?

You sure you just aren't missing the rubber bumper it needs to hit?
That's what we call the penny fix because you can tape a penny in place to get you home..or forever lol

Hi

I'll check that. I took two of the switches apart and found the same problem, the plastic plunger that pushes the contacts apart is getting chewed up by the contacts. After a while theirs not enough of the plunger left to push the contacts apart. In the case of the third switch I installed, with in 24 hours it failed.

It could be caused by improper installation of the switch,. If the switch sticks too far out and allows the brake pedal to rest against it, the switch will self destruct.

The switch doesn't break it's the plastic bumper that disintegrates I've replaced about a dozen of them with either carriage bolts or machine screws and nuts(Cheap and bullet proof)
