Can someone help me identify what this part is? (98 maxima)

My car starts maybe one out of 10 times. The other 9 make a buzzing noise coming from this weird black circle and i have no idea what it is.

All battery features work like lights and radio
Thanks

It's the evap canister purge control valve.

Does your engine run at all?

Is the check engine light on? If so, do you know which codes are present.

Help us help you. Give us more information.

I got stuck a while back, same problem wouldn’t start. I kept hearing the same buzzing from the same part you are referring to and was convinced it had something to do with it. Turns out it was my starter, and my purge valve must have always made that sound, just never heard it before over the sound of the starter cranking like it should.

FYI, throttle position sensor can also buzz when you turn the key 2 clicks without cranking when it’s not exactly calibrated right. TPS is right there so maybe that’s what you hear.

That shouldn’t affect starting, just food for thought

Also make sure you clean out the solenoid behind the rear driver side wheel. That can clog as well along with the canister.

If you find charcoal from the evap canister in the lines, you need to replace the evap canister, otherwise if you clean the lines, they will just suck more charcoal out of the canister.

i just replaced that, if it's not throwing a code i would still take it off and clean it and test to see if it's opening and closing properly. there's a video on you tube showing how to do it, if it's not opening and closing then it might be bad as mine had nothing in it, but wasn't opening properly when i tested it. look for codes pertaining to the evap system.

Look's like It's the 20yr+ original part too! Best to clean it and see if it needs replacing.
