Manufacturing date of 7/98 means you should have a 1999 model year Maxima. Please verify that the VIN says 1999 model as the info I am providing is for a 1999 model. The 1999 Maxima wiring is different from any other Maxima.
The ECCS relay (also called the ECM relay) is a brown colored, dual pole, make relay. Pins 2, 3 and 6 should have 12 volts on them at all times.
Fuse # 57 (10 amp, underhood) protects pins 2 and 3, while fuse # 58 (10 amp, underhood) protects pin 6.
Pins 1 and 2 are the electromagnetic energizing coil. Pin 1 is connected to the ECM/ECU pin 4 and will be connected to ground to energize the relay and close the internal contacts.
When the relay is energized -
12 volts from pin 3 is connected to pin 5. The voltage is then distributed to the ECM/ECU pins 67 and 72.
12 volts from pin 6 is connected to pin 7. The voltage is then distributed to various spots, such as the ignition coils, the IACV valve, the MAF, the EGR valve and a few other things.
To identify the pin numbers on the ECCS/ECM relay, remove the relay and look on the bottom of the relay by the connector pins. The numbers are usually pretty small. If there is a diagram on the top of the relay case DO NOT - repeat - DO NOT go by that. This applies to every relay used in the car.
