Past weekend, I replaced alternator (battery & brake light) in my 4th gen, $220 - $20 core. Time was crunched so I did not shop around for low cost unit. The bad one was from Nissan (100k). I am thinking of rebuilding this alternator to be used as spare for my other 4th gen.
There is no play in bearings. I guess all it needs is rectifier and regulator circuit. I checked Ebay stores. Many are selling kit for approx $60, including bearings, the circuit board with bushes.
Has anyone attempted rebuilding? Is it labor intensive? any hidden catcha to be aware of? Or, any other consumable parts to look for?
A local rebuild shop charges $120 for the 110-amp unit, with 9 mo. warranty, 2-3 days turn-time. Autozone can check one on/off vehicle. Perhaps self-rebuilding may not be cost/labor effective. Thanks.
I have found via experience and read many online experiences that Hitachi rebuilds are mostly the only ones that last. I can't comment on local re-builder's reputations and deliverables. But investigate what parts he will supply and install for longevity, if you go that route.

On the other hand for about $50 more you can buy a remanned unit from your local parts retailer that includes a life-time warranty and 0 days turn around time.
Wandering around and found Ebay unit, $70 with lifetime warranty. No way, it seems unreal. If I find one around 100 local, I'll be happy.

The store has 4.5 ratings on Google review. Even if they say some name, I can't really tell.
