98 max shift lever

Hello, I have a 98 max w/ auto trans. My shifting lever works fine and engages into all gears properly, but my problem is my shifter wont lock into gear ( R, N, D, 2, 1 ) I can shift w/o pushing button in and worry car may shift from drive - neutral while driving accidentally...Has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know what problem could be? Any help greatly appreciated, thanks

The neutral safety switch could be wearing out, i would start there. Its on the front of the trans.

thank you for the advice ! I did put brand new safety neutral switch in. I will have to get an extra set of eyes so I can check out what's going on under there while someone is shifting gear selector.

Go out to Your car.. Lift up and remove Your Shifter Bezel/trim, To the right of the shifter look down, you'll see a threaded Rod, Roughly 4mm by 4 inches or so. It should be locked into the Sheathing ahead of it. They usually pull out and fall downward. You can attempt to push it back into the cable and somehow lock it into place. But the lock tabs usually break thus causing this problem. Its called a Shift lock cable.
