Programming a new keyless entry key fob!

Ok…here’s what happened. I still have the two original key fobs for my Maxima. Now…all the icons have faded and disappeared so I decided to get new key fobs. the new fobs arrived and I closely followed the programming instructions…or so I thought.

the instructions were to close all doors, hit the lock button to lock all doors then insert the key 6 times into the ignition then the hazards would flash. Once the hazards flashed indicated the car was in programming mode then turn the ignition to accessory then hit any key on the fob and now the fob is programmed.

well….i did everything as instructed but the hazards never flashed after the 6 time I inserted the key but I continued thru the process. What actually happened is when I got to the “hit any key on the fob” part of the instructions is when the hazards finally flashed but now my key fobs DO NOT work at all.

I’ve followed those instructions several different times but the hazards do not flash after inserting the key. I even tried inserting the key up to 20 times but the hazards never flashed. The only time I can get the hazards to flash is after turning the car to accessory then hitting a key on the fob

i think I’ve obviously done something to turn the programming off and disarm the key fobs so I’m hoping someone can tell me how to reverse the problem I’ve caused and how to get these key fobs programmed properly.

thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Do all of your door switches work properly? (Dome light comes on when each door is opened and turns off when closed.) The door switches, particularly the driver's door switch, are integral parts of many programming / resetting features of the car. If any one of them is not working properly it may prevent the car from entering the programming mode.

Well boo. That would have been the easy one. Okay, next educated guess is the ignition switch. Does yours illuminate after you open the door and before you insert the key? Does the light turn off once the key is inserted?

I'm not sure the inner workings of the switch in regards to key detection, but I do know these old Nissan ignitions can wear out. My mother had a '92 pickup that in the early 2000's could be started with the key, the tip of a screwdriver, or any stout, thin object you had available.

DUDE! I bet that’s the problem! To answer your questions….no…the switch does not light up. I had to replace the ignition switch several years ago but purchased the switch thru Autozone.

As much as I HATE TO…I’ll call the local Nissan dealer and let them bend me over for a factory switch.

i really appreciate all your help.

Well…according to the local Nissan dealership the light surrounding the ignition won’t effect the key fob programming.

The light itself is insignificant, but there must be a reed switch or something inside the ignition that tells the BCM the key is inserted in order to initiate the programming process. I looked through the FSM to try to identify the part, or at least the wires connected to it to jump together, but I found no mention of it. The ignition switch section only addresses the wires related to the ACC, On, and Start positions. I looked through the Multi Remote Control section and found nothing there either.

If you decide to dig in to the steering column and find more wires to the ignition switch than the ones specifically shown below, those may be the ones you need.

You guys aren’t going to believe this but….out of the blue the remotes started working again. I was walking out to the car last night and by accident hit the lock button which caused the tail lights to flash amd I heard the doors lock. I flipped out!

ive done absolutely nothing to the car since I seemed to erase the key fob programming last week.

amyway…for some reason my key fobs are now working. Sure appreciate all your help
