Is 98 I30 ECU a direct swap of 98 SE ECU?

Does it need to be reprogrammed to go into 98 SE?

No need to reprogram. You are good.

This only applies if your a 99 maxima with the nats chip programmed keys. The 99 ecu will need a nats programming, if your swaping the ecu from a 99 i30 infinniti.

So I did the test. I unplugged only the connector to the old one and plugged it to the 98 I30 ECU (from JY), and lay it on passenger floor. Without any programming, I was able to start my engine, drove the car around the block for 30 minutes. Engine ran fine, no warning light of any thing. I briefly took the car to freeway for 5 minutes and it performed well. My remote works fine too. So far so good, but...
My aim was to verify whether the current ECU is giving the car 'hard start when cold/warm' issue. No it does not, so I need to look for other causes.
Again, thanks for the info.

Yep. My 99 I30 is running an ECU from a 99 GLE. NATS had to be reprogrammed for the swap. The dealer barely knew how to use Consult to reprogram NATS and keys -- and that was a long time ago.

.

I had this issue when I bought my 95. I ended up replacing the ignition switch & fuel pressure regulator and the issue went away. I got both parts at my local junkyard/pick-a-part

I have tried so many other things, none of them worked. At one time I thought I found the cause (replace TB and FICD plunger, and TPS) that I gave my working but rusty donor car (97) away and started maintenance routine. But then after 6 months working fine, the issue occurs again. Now I need to source substitute parts with JY ones for trial & error. I'll try your suggestion next. Thx.

Since it seems you access to a junkyard, it's worth a shot replacing the cam sensor (located in the passenger side, close to power steering resevoir) and the crankshaft sensor (located close to the oil pan). Can't recall if this was where the root of my issue was, but after replacing both of these sensors + ignition switch + FPR, my hard start issue went away, Good luck!
