Won’t start unless I push on shifter

Have a 95 Maxima with auto tranny amd a few months ago it developed a problem that happens every now and then.

it doesn’t matter if I’m parked on an incline, decilne or level surface sometimes the engine won’t start unless I push forward on the shifter. It may take once or it may take 6 times but unless I push forward on the shifter she won’t start.

hoping someone can hook a brutha up and tell me how to fix this problem.

Inspect your shift cable and cable end connections.

Make sure everything moves as it should.

Make sure there aren’t any kinks in the cable, that nothing is binding or rubbing and that there are no splits in the cable casing.

If the cable is damaged or mis-shapen, replace it.

If the cable checks out normal, replace your Park/Neutral Position Switch.

Here’s the shifter cable, if needed.

Agreed. Auto trans will only start in park or neutral. Either the cable is binding or the neutral switch is bad. Try shifting into neutral and starting if your in a pinch.

I agree, it's most likely the switch going bad.
