Emergency! I need a new exhaust system!
Emergency! I need a new exhaust system!
Help!
I'm need your advise guys. I've got a '96 Maxima GXE. I've had it for approx. 2 years now and my mechanic at the Nissan Dealership tells me that I need a whole new exhaust system except for the Catolytic Converter.
What do you guys recomment I do. They are trying to charge me $1600 just for an OEM exhaust system. If I'm going to be investing any money at all, I want to know if the OEM exhaust they are selling me is ok.
I'm new to the whole Modifying-my-max thing, so I kind of need a little advise here. Please help me out! Thanks
Craig

Reason
What was the reason for needing a whole new exhaust ?? Sounds fishy. Bring it into a different place and get a second oppinion...The probably saw surface rust and are trying to scam you...
I doubt very seriously that the whole system needs to be replaced. What did you take the car in for in the first place? Either way, for $1600 you could redo the entire exhaust system and have money left over to play with. Aftermarket parts are readily available for your car and certainly in the exhaust dept. I'm with the others, get a second opinion and start from there. Let us know how it goes.

If you want to keep an OEM exhaust system check with Courtsey Nissan (see links page). They could probably get you OEM parts for far less than your local dealership. Courtsey Nissan parts saved me $110 when I recently purchased brake pads and hardware kits for all four rotors.
Then you could take your new exhaust parts anywhere to have them installed. If you want to modify your max than you could get a y-pipe, aftermarket cat, and cat back exhaust for less money than what the dealership is asking. From a mod standpoint you can't go wrong with a y-pipe.

The words Nissan Dealer and Exaust System should never be used in the same sentance. Unless it's proceeded by the word warranty.
Just a little grammer lesson for everybody.

I think you might just need a new catalytic converter and they are just trying to scam you to get you to buy the whole system go somewhere else for a second opinion. But if you want a new exhaust that's a different story
Re: Emergency! I need a new exhaust system!
I'd avoid that dealer$hip from now on.
In any case, when quoted high $$$ figures, always get a second opinion.
Reminds me of the time my dad was hearing loud exhaust noises. Firestone quoted him $500 to replace the rear exhaust. He went to a different shop and they said that their was a leak and $150 later, he was good to go. The crooks assume you are clueless about your car and attempt to soak you by system replacements when component replacement is needed.

With only this mod, it'll provide better looks. That's about it. So answer (in my opinion) is no.
