how to compensate without ABS

Whats the most BASIC thing I can do to make up for the lack of ABS?
I just realized that at high speeds with my stock rotors and brakes that I really dont feel safe and when its raining Im afraid to do more than 20mph because one time i skidded and swirved all over the place. ALMOSt right into this truck.
And i can not afford to pay $500 for a new braking system so thats out.
please dont say slow down.

i think that all that can really be done is to just continuously pump the brakes...don't slam down on them...but apply foot, once you feel it's about to lock up, release pressure, then reapply...i could be wrong, but this is just what i do in my 97GLE w/ no ABS...that's the best i can offer...also, don't bigger brakes allow for greater stopping? not sure about that one

If you have the Nissan OEM tires (almost any model year), that's your problem. They absolutely suuuuck in the wet. The best thing you can do to increase your traction & safety is to upgrade your tires. (And of course, increase your following distance)

Go to www.tirerack.com & check out the tire survey results. -Great insights on tire performance in a number of categories: wet, dry, etc. Even if you don't buy there, the info. tools are great.

Beyond that, I would recommend doing some research & practice on emergency braking, also referred to as "threshhold braking." This is something you should practice (under the right conditions), so you'll be better able to anticipate how your car will respond in future emergencies.
