my friend has a 97 Jeep Cherokee Sport....I honestly don't think he can beat me...i understand it's a jeep but running down the parkway with just dodging cars, or on a straight away, I really think i will annihilate him, but can u guys tell me? I have no mods on my car (performance wise) and neither does he...just regular vs regular...someone speak the truth dammit

Its a 4.0L Vs 3.0L . Depending on how old it is, and adjusting for any weight differences...

.. oh forget it. you win. trust me. My sister owns a Cherokee sport. I have driven it. Its horrible.

it sure isnt a V6, unless the cherokee was made 1984-1986

read my screen name haha. give the jeep the credit of the inline 6 at least.. its a good engine, not maxima fast though.. same HP; MUCH heavier

I am almost positive they made the 5.9 limited only in 1998 It does 0-60 in about 7 flat but there is a S/C kit availiable for it Also a little warning about the next gen Grand Cherokee its going to have a 6 speed manual with a 5.7 Hemi V8 that is supposed to beat the Stant cobra R and Vette LS1 This is probably because of the new AWD traction control system and handling system made by Benz mated with this V8 Beast

dude, i dont know about that, jeep is downsizing its engine, and jeep has never made a 6 spd OR 5.7 (350 V8) 5.9 was around for 1998 only, and the 5.2 was dropped in favor of the 4.7. it makes more power, but 5.7 ISNT happening, and a standard in a grand?? another most likely no no.

My friend has a Jeep and he beats me off the line but, as soon as we hit the other side of the intersection i am winning. I have no performance mods on my car either. Jeeps have good low-end pick-up.

WOW....seems like JeepRage is the only one here with CORRECT information...

as for the race....I used to have a 98 Cherokee Sport....and I'd wouldn't laugh at it....espeically with an AUTO max...I could take an Acura 3.5TL to 60 with a brake torque launch. Guys please don't call the Cherokee "AWD"...that makes it sound like some Soccer mom CAR. It's a 4x4 plain and simple...with LOTS of low end torque.

between AWD, 4 wheel drive and alltime 4 wheel drive. arent jeeps all time 4x4, thats so much harder to write than awd.

nope...my Jeep had Command-trac 4 wheel drive. You were able to switch between rear-wheel and part-time 4 wheel drive...if I was racing somebody on dry pavement...I'd ALWAYS use rear-wheel only becuase it accelerates faster.

Well here is the article about it
from car-truck.com buzz watch
The only highpoint on the Jeep front for 2004 will be an ultra high performance Jeep Grand Cherokee "Sport" package featuring Chrysler's hot new 5.7 liter Hemi V8! The goal is to create a Jeep capable of stomping ANY vehicle on the road. Notice that I didn't say SUV, that's because the engineers have created a package that they believe will be able to whip a Mustang "R" or a Corvette.

With an estimated 353 horsepower and 353 lb. ft.of torque the new Hemi is definitely up to the task (in comparison, the LS1 V8 used in the Corvette puts out 345 hp and 350 lb. ft of torque). The Hemi will be mated to a high performance 6-speed manual transmission. It's all-wheel-drive system will use electronically controlled transfer case teamed with electronically controlled front and rear differentials.

To ensure that the hot rod Jeep has World class handling, the package will include "adaptive" suspension dampening (both for front-to-rear and /side-to-side control). The system should be similar to the ESP suspension currently available on Mercedes Benz cars. The Sport will ride on eighteen or nineteen inch wheels shod with performance rubber. I also expect to see an aero kit on the body. Like the 5.9 limited Grand Cherokees, the idea is to stir up excitement around the vehicle to get it through its last couple years of production.

I have researched and owned afew jeeps and right now I own a grand cherokee but still love the max more

dam, how did my question about whether i can beat my friend turn into a chrysler issue, lol, well, he has a 98 not 97 and it's a cherokee sport, NOT a limited or Grand Cherokee...his car looks hot, real clean and all but when i look at it, i don't think of speed...so he'll smoke me until we hit about 25 right? then that's when maxima's endurance comes into play...lol...gotcha

He shouldn't be able to touch you with a ten foot poll. Those trucks were pretty fast (I had a buddy with one that was stick), but the Max should be able to take him no problem IMHO.

thanks, its an honor.. its all about my Screen Name

ive had a few different 4.0s... they have lots of torque, and are a bigger engine, by no means are slow up to 60, but the maxima is hands down faster. race to 30, i dont the jeep would lose, but DAMN they get slow after 90 or so.

he is right about AWD too... selectrac is the only full time transfer case in a cherokee, and thats optional full time at that.

How is your friend going to smoke you. Unless he has a big enough rolling paper I really can't foresee it happening.

Unless you're racing up a steep embankment or going across 4 wheel drive terrain, you should win!

Kirk actually got rid of his Max to get the Jeep so he could slow down .... or so he says!
