The overdrive button toggles overdrive on or off. When off, you are out of overdrive gear which means you in a lower gear which gives you more performance and acceleration. It is a rough explaination but here is a site which gives you more infomation.

Just leave it on. Dont worry about it.
If you are in traffic and running between 40 and 60 mph, switching it off will reduce hunting for gears.
Also, when going for top speed leave it off until you redline 3rd gear (see my sig pic). This drops you into 4th gear at a better RPM to keep acclerating.

It turns o/d off. Which means your tranny will only use three gears!
