What does the overdrive button do?

What does the overdrive on/off button on an automagic do exactly to performance and acceleration?

The overdrive button toggles overdrive on or off. When off, you are out of overdrive gear which means you in a lower gear which gives you more performance and acceleration. It is a rough explaination but here is a site which gives you more infomation.

overdrive

Just leave it on. Dont worry about it.

If you are in traffic and running between 40 and 60 mph, switching it off will reduce hunting for gears.

Also, when going for top speed leave it off until you redline 3rd gear (see my sig pic). This drops you into 4th gear at a better RPM to keep acclerating.

Leave your OD switch turned on all the time. For more info, read your owners manual. It's that book inside your glove box. Very useful information.

I don't know my stick shift doesn't have one!
It turns o/d off. Which means your tranny will only use three gears!

when over drive is off, you cant go past 3rd gear and the torque convertor is active. when over drive is on, 4 gear is activated and the torque convertor is locked up

I only put OD on when I know I'm going to be going faster than 40mph for a few miles. Otherwise I want the 3rd gear acceleration ready to go.

Just chill with overdrive on for normal driving...you will get better gas mileage. However if you are going to race somebody, take it off because it will eliminate the hesitation with your tranny.
