need knock sensor...advice please

I just received the k.s. code from my CEL. My car has all the symptoms like low idling, etc. I priced one on carparts.com for about 220.00 and at Autozone for 260.00. I was hoping someone on the forum would know a better place to get one. Any advice will be helpful.

Thanks,
Andrew

I purchased mine in courtesy nissan at their web site for ~135. You can also change it yourself if you have small hands. It's located under the manifold and secured to the engine block by a #12 bolt. IMO it made a world of difference in engine performance after the change.

Coz @ Ultimate Z

Call Coz at Ultimate Z (630) 837-0700 - He's a great guy and has been a friend to this board. I got mine from him for $122.

I just replaced my KS tonight....Don't go to AZ or any other parts store...get the OEM Nissan one. The list is $160, you can often do better with Courtesy....

Both my little bro (AXRA) and I needed a KS. I can't believe that a bad KS doesn't trip the CEL. Who knows how long I've been driving around in "limp home" mode.

Replacing that thing does make quite a difference. It is a biatch to put in though....took me 1 1/2 hours to replace the KS and change all the plugs. Good thing I have small Jap hands...without them, there's no way I could have done it without taking off the manifold.

I think (now) that a Max enthusiast should check the ECU for stored codes at least quarterly. A healthy Max is a happy (and fast) Max.

I got mine from www.nissanparts.cc for 135 shipped. it was a good deal, as the local dealer was offering 172. i was like HELL no. yeah its a pain to remove, my hands arent too small, so i had to squeeze them into the hole, using my other hand to push the skin down into the hole. yeah it sounds sick, but i was much happier driving my car around. it actually makes me want to get some good performance mods now...

what are the early symptoms of a bad KS? does it gradually loose performance? or does it all of a sudden go bad and slow?

I am noticing it somewhat gradually but now it is more of a pain. I ordered one and waiting for it to come in. Just check your ECU for an error. That is the easiest way.

That's cool that you're going to replace your k.s. but you should pull your codes first. The n.s. DOESN'T trip the c.e.l. so you probably have another problem. Sorry to tell you that but hope it helps somehow.

Why does everyone say that It's code 0304 and it sure as hell has been tripping mine lately. My mileage has been dropping and the car just didn't feel right. The code came up so I reset it and two days later it came back. I should have the sensor this weekend, but I'm interested in knowing why everyone says the knock sensor will not trip the CEL.

CEL

I don't know about your car, but the CEL doesn't come on by itself. I only found out about the K.S. when I checked the ECU for the code. In other words, I didn't know how long I was driving without the k.s. working properly.

Same thing with me. Maybe there are ther problems setting off the CEL in your case iwannabmw?

I say it from personal experience. My cel never came on for the K.S. but did trip later when my OS sensor went bad. The dealer was able to tell me when the two codes were generated and the K.S. was months before the light came on due to the rear O2 sensor. Consider yourself lucky then; I wish mine had come on sooner. Maybe that would've prevented the O2 sensor failure

Okay, not trying to doubt anyone, but I have seen the knock sensor trip the CEL by itself. Two days in a row it tripped while I was driving on a road course and both days it was on the third session of the day. 0304 was the only code I retrieved both times. I just assume the track driving was messing with the ECM and there wasn't really a problem. This past week it has tripped twice just cruising home from work, though these times it was accompanied by other codes as well for the emission control system (0903 and 0705). The first two times it came on was by itself though, so maybe it has to be really bad to trip the light instead of just be stored in the system

Another dumb question...
but going back to listing the symptoms of the bad K.S....

bad gas milage? poor acceleration? what else?

and what does bad or low idle speed you guys mentioned???
Something doesn't feel right about my Max, and I do have the code when I check the computer, but I can't remember how my car was before it came on, I may have been driving with it for a year now and never knew about it.

Thank for answering my questions.
