New to Nissan/Maxima
New to Nissan/Maxima
Well, my Integra GS-R was stolen and here I am, with a 98 Maxima SE 5spd. I never thought I would drive a Nissan but I liked the way it drove, plus it was big and came with a 5spd. I like it so far. What do you guys suggest for the first mod? I'm thinking Springs in a big way, but I'd like some of your input. What types of springs would you suggest that actually get the car low enough - i've never seen so much gap in my life! Also, what are the big/good brands to look for for general mods and where do you get them, other than Stillen, which seems pretty high price, by the way.
Peace

Use the search function in the upper right and you'll find tons of info. Anyway, for aftermarket stuff, some of the biggies are Stillen (or Stealin as they are becoming known as), Jim Wolf Technologies, Cattman, Warpspeed Performance. Check out custommaxima.com for some cool ideas also.

Oh, and BTW, don't even ask about putting a turbo on it, this has been discussed and argued many times over the years. Do a search before you ask, wait, on that note, jsut do a search and DON'T ask, this will save you the grief from the other "bad members".
Springs will do a whole lot for the handling, so will the Rear Anti Sway Bar - you can get one of those from either Stillen or Addco. I have an Addco and love it. It doesn't look as nice as the Stealin, but it also costs less. Comming from Acura you're going to be in for a rude awakening - we don't have nearly the aftermarket that other manufacturers do.
I would get the RSB, then y-pipe and intake at same time, and then finally springs. In any event, welcome to the board and sorry to hear about your last car. Good luck w/ the Max, I'm sure you'll love it.

Well, thanks for the info. What is the address for Addco and some of these others you guys are telling me about. Also, is anyone here in Dallas or is everyone on one of the coasts. Once again, I appreciate the info - I think my first mod will be the Progress springs. I can't stand all the damn gap up front, followed by the clear bumpers. That should set me up for a while until I can save more $ for the stillen rear section exhaust and rims.

well this is what I would recomend doing
1) short throw shifter -instant result that you feel all the time and it's nice to drive with
2a) either Stillen or Adbco Rear Sway bar- that would also give you huge results in the handling department, the car won't sway as much
2b) get front strut tower brace (from ebay)- some people notice difference, I did, it suppose to make your front more rigit and improves handling
3) do the real suspension mod - on this, everyone has their own opinion
springs:
Ground Control-coilover-I have that
H&R springs, about 30% stiffer then stock, 1.5" drop, I had that, good ride
shocks:
Tokico-wouldn't recomend those, some people have good luck with them, mine died real quick, so make your decision
Koni Adjustable - I say the best shocks for maxima, but front ones are pain to install
KYB's adjustable- almost as good as koni, easier to install, but warantee is void if droped past 1.5" (something like that) which shows that you MIGHT (don't want to hear anything on this
)have problems if you drive it hard
they have other options for the suspension, just search around, go to www.maximadriver.com and he has reviews of a lot of the mods
I would say do the intake/exhaust and "looking good" mods after
Vinipux

Go to the Maxima.org homepage and click on links. There you will find websites for some of the Nissan aftermarket. Just so you know, with the exception of the y-pipe, exhausts don't add any real hp gains to our cars. So only switch exhuast components if you're looking for different sounds and not performance.

how could exhaust not help, if you have a 2.5 y pipe it might be smart to do a 2.5 catback becuz there will be a lot of restriction resulting making the y pipe go back to stock feeling at the high rpms, am i right? i duno, just a thought
Damn, I just typed a whole long reply and it's gone due to can not find server. Ahhhhhh, Well to sum it up this is one of the many threads that led me to my remarks concerning exhuasts on our cars

What is a good shifter? In the world of Acura, Pacesetter is not highly thought of and I don't know what your thought on it are. I do like the fact that it is adjustable and can be had for around $50-60. Is it worth anything? I think I'm definitely going with the suspension mods first, because that is both cosmetic and functional, although I am more impressed with the stock Maxima suspension than I was with the highly touted stock (and very soft) Integra GS-R suspension.
Thanks guys
