Update: I30t - Maxima Limited Slip Tranny Swap - Silly Dealer...
UPDATE PART 2:I am trying to get definitive answer on changing the axles with the tranny conversion. I know I have to change the d/s axle, but as for the p/s, i have been getting all types of answers, yes u have to, no you don't, i am not sure - just change it anyway.
I just bought rebuilt axles for the car and i know i lost that money in the d/s because that's gotta go, but if i can retain the p/s it would be great.
PLEASE CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME A DEFINITIVE ANSWER.
p.s. i went to a transmission place called Cottman Transmission in Binghamton, NY, they appear to be a reputable place, (Better Business Bureau recommendation), they appear to have other stores around the nation and they even do a pretty comprehensive Transmission Check for free, heres their website www.cottman.com, they told me it would cost $312 for the labor for the swap, any comments...
Tricks are for kids
I went to my local dealer just to make sure they could do the swap of my 95 5-speed Maxima tranny w/o limited slip, w/97 infinit i30t 5speed trany w/limited slip. I might have attempted this myself if it was summer, but i am in school, have midterms, and the regular tranny thats already in my car is about to give out. So i get to the dealer to finalize the price and make sure its actually going to work from their mouths, even though i already know it should work (thanks to u guys .
. So after the counter person takes me back into the service area to talk with a mechanic, the mechanic says, NO it won't work. Then i tell him that i have a "friend" in the industry who told me that it would work it you changed the axles, as the max and i30 are basically the same car. Then he says in that case it probably should work, however the hubs my be different. ???WHAT???, i never heard anyone even mention the hubs being different, i told the mechanic that they are most likely, (like 99.9% most likely) the same. He then says yeah, you are probably right, but since he has never done this sort of thing before, he can't be sure until the job actually commenced, and then if something does not work out, i still have to pay for labor. What a joke!, i was a little taken a back by the fact that this mechanic seems to have no idea about the car, or even care to do a little research for himself to find out if this would work for me. He would rather just start the work, and run into something down the road and tell me, yeah it won't work, wheres my $350 for the labor. What do u guys thing i should do, find a different dealer, go to a regular mechanic. I figured that a job of this magnitude should be done by nissan, if anything goes wrong, i could always bring it back. Any comments/suggestions...

All dealerships don't know what they're doing. A nissan dealership near me is sort of performance orientate( in my mind) because it is owned by BOB Sharp (Hint: bob sharp racing). So they don't mind doing performace type stuff. They had no problem installing my short throw shifter.
It all depends what type of dealership you deal with.

Projects like this almost always contain unknown obstacles that turn a seemingly 'quick' job, into one that drags on forever.
He's been there before, and would probably rather get payed for guaranteed hours on jobs that he is more familiar with. Sometimes a part is needed that takes a while to locate... tying up a bay for days that could be occupied by another car he is making money on.
I hope your swap goes as easily as you think it will... but until you've actually done one, you don't know all the little 'gremlins' to look out for.
Good Luck!
Hey stupid non-related question.
Swapping the tranny isa bout $400 in labor right? Converting a Max from auto -> manual takes a long time + $1400+ in parts. Is that true simply because they have to change the gears + the shifters etc?
What would it cost me to change it @ a shop?

From the information i have gathered here at maxima.org, the swap should be pretty straight forward, from the people who already did it, they have told me once the axles are swapped, its just like putting in a regular 5 speed max tranny.
The initial dealer told me $350 for the labor, as for changing from auto to 5speed, i do not have a clue how much that would cost, or even if they would do, (liabilty issues), I know one thing, the dealer i went to would not do it.
Hey guys I got the limited slip tranny today, and on 1 side there is a hole where the shaft leads into, and on the other side their is a bigger hole with a white plastic cap on it, i assume this is the driver side, it feels pretty stiff to me.
, anyways, i am trying to get a definitive answer on the axles, i just rebuilt bth the axles in my max about 3 weeks ago(before i knew the tranny was going out), and i know that i will have to replace the d/s, but if i could save the p/s that would be great as it is basically new. i have searched the forum and have gotten a wide array of answers, some say change the d/s and p/s, while others say to just change the d/s. PLEASE HELP!!!

i won it on ebay for $122.50
,i wasn't really even looking for a limited slip tranny, i just needed a 5speed tranny because my bearings and a syncro are failing, the limited slip (vlsd) was a bonus.

So your the one who got it. I was watching that and couldnt believe the final price. Not a bad find at all. How much was shipping to get it to you? While your getting a new tranny you might wanna upgrade the clutch while it is out.
SuDZ
I actually had a friend who lives in baltimore, maryland (which was where the tranny was) who just so happend to be coming up to NYC the next day after i won the auction, so the seller of the tranny dropped it off at my friends house (free of charge !!!) and my friend delivered it too me
TOTAL COST: McDonald Extra Value Meal for my friend who brought it up

Good luck
It would suck if this tranny had problems and i put it into my max, that's why i am going to take the tranny to a transmission place and get them to take a look at it like MAX98SE suggested to me. Hopefully they will give it a clean bill of health.
DEFINITELY get a good transmission shop to do the work for you......I can't stress enough how important this is....I had to have my 97's 5-speed re-built....so I had a quaife installed too....and the trans shop that I went to did a GREAT job.....my trans is better now that it was when I got the friggen car....
