Custom Home Depot Grill -- li'l help?

So, I tried making my mesh grille today for my 97SE...

DAMN ITS WAY HARDER THAN I THOUGHT!!!

Any tips? I'm trying mesh the top grill keepin' the Nissan burger and the 97 bar (for lack of a better word...y'know the bar in the middle of the grill which is not found on the 95/96)...

It's hard enough to make the template...maybe I'm going about this all wrong...

thanks to all!

hmmm....I don't think so...atleast, it won't be any more
it looked good when I made a quick mock-up, but, to get it right,
well, I need more help!

Unless, you're referring to the fact that the mesh grill can be one piece on the 95/96, and not the 97/99.

IT's easy. Just make a cardboard cutout that fits perfect. Then trace that cardboard cutout onto the mesh, then use wire cutters or tin snips to cut out the mesh. Then use trash bag twist ties (stripped of their paper) to fasten to the plastic spines of the factory grille. BTW - remove the hamburger first and then re-apply it over the mesh. Hope this helps but I've been out for atty: so I'm a little I'll have to check this post tomorrow and see what I've written.

I just had Maximaracer28 make me one of these. Look in the GD forum for the Mesh Grill group deal. He makes them by using a template and then cutting the mesh and bending it to fit correctly. I'm waiting for delivery, if it doesn't look as nice as it does in the pics then I'll just hold on to it. It was only $18 shipped anyway.

Thanks for the tips...BUT....

The hardest part is making that cardboard cut-out...I know how bad that sounds -- if I can't cut cardboard right, how the hell am I gonna cut the wire mesh

BUT, in the 97 with that middle grill bar, and the curvature of the grill itself, its making this a difficult task...

thanks for all the replies...

A little ghetto but, what I did to do this was take some newspaper and shove it in there, fold and tape, fold and tape until I had the right shape. Then I taped it to the mesh and cut it out.. Worked great for me. Perfect fit.

Err....well I sold quite a few of the grills and what I did was take mesh grill that I made, and clamp it to uncut mesh while liniing up the diamonds, then cut away moving the clamps when they get in the way. I am also still selling them for $18 shipped, and arrafio I sent yours out this morning....any more ?'s or if anyone wants one e-mail me. Thanks,

Mike

Mike- Did you overnight it like you said you would? Or should I expect it in a few days? Thanks for finally getting it out, I appreciate it. I know you were busy. I'll let you know how I like it.

Takes some time

This takes some time but is well worth it. Get a few extra pieces of mesg/gutter guard. Another option ofr the 97-99 is to take off your grill. Two tabs at the top right hand corners of the grill.

Remove grill and set up an area to work. To create the templete, I cut out a piece of grill that matched the back of the grill, that's right the back. Now I had a single piece of mesh that was approximately the same size as the whole front. I then placed this on the front and made some small marks where I needed to cut it down into two pieces. The hard part is cutting it so it matched the curve of the grill the right way.

Take some time and it will match up perfectly.

Good luck!

To remove the hamburger - my 95 was held on w/ double sided tape. It also had two alignment posts. To remove, do it on a warm day or heat up emblem w/ a hairdryer or something then gently pry on it to get a grip then carefully pull it away like you would a sticker. Just remember, it won't bend like a sticker so don't force it. You could also use dental floss to try to free it up.
As for rusting, no the mesh won't rust but you may want to paint it silver or some other color so it looks nice. The original finish is kinda uneven.
