Radio Shack Radar Detecors ??

Ive had one for a while but its my friends that I have to give back to him in a couple of weeks...Do you think its worth buying another one from radio shack...There was a $180 one for $130... and the one that he let me borrow is the $150 model...What do you all think ??? Should I save up for the Valentine One or just get a Radio Shack Brand ??

Save your money and get the best you can afford. There are some RD's that aren't worth two dead flies, and others that are worth their weight in gold. Do not get that debate started but basically there are two major brands that most of the diehards here use; V1 and Passport, but trust me you don't want to get that debate started. Bottom line save as much as you can and buy the best one because it will pay for itself in the long run 10 fold.

Yeah once you add up the tickets that could have been there and the price of insurance rates, they make you smile the first time it works.

Look at the RatShack detectors, and look at other ones on the market. You'll be able to match each RatShack detector to one of another brand, because they just rebadge them, repackage them, then usually jack up the price. Unless you can get one on clearance, you're better off buying the name brand.

I don't have one, but the Valentine, the Escort Passport 8500, and the BEL 980 seem to be front runners. Head over to http://www.radartest.com/ and decide for yourself. I'm personally leaning towards the Valentine when I finally get one.

escort 7500.8500 dont see differnce in the 2 (both can upgrade)

bell 900 and up are good (upgrade)

cobra is not bad compared to radio shack, whitles, etc

V1/V2 vary good but to much for the buck (escort is as good but not with the dual horn and also can tell you how many bogies and where they at)

everything else sucks

the only advice that i can afford is go slower, at my work a police officer just started working and I was asking him questions about that, and he said that their radar technology is so advanced and accurate that radar detector don't do anything for it, so not to get a ticket just go slower

I used to work at radio shack.....the 150 dollar model is ok, i assume its the one that doesnt talk....the best thing they do is alert you to police at night, when you can't see them travelling behind you or coming at you from the opposite direction, they still dont give you any amount of time to react though. For the record, radio shack radar detector's are made by Cobra, the same as there cb radios i believe....

Sorry guys I am not a radar detector GURU (and I don't want to start a debate) but my RADIO SHACK detector, I think it is a whistler has saved me 6 times in the last year. The first time it worked it paid for it self.

get the Bel 936 if you don't have the money for a passport or V1...

goto http://www.radartest.com/MRDT.html and read the reviews... it will become obvious to you that the best compromise between price and performance is the 936 (they list the bell 880, the 936 replaced it).

as for the radioshack comments... any radar detector is better than no radar detector... but if you can have a much better one for a little more money, why not go for it.

If you're gonna get one, get a Valentine One. I've given up
counting my saves - too many to bother with.

features

Another thing to consider is supplemental features. I have a Uniden Stealth that has a built-in compass and receives advisory broadcasts (such as a bridge being out or massive traffic jam). Very useful stuff to have.

Always consider a radar detector as an aide, not a substitute, to your awareness of police. Instant-on laser radars are fool proof, except if you have an expensive jammer or phantom device. And with this type of police radar becoming more common, most radar detectors are becoming nothing more than amusing interior decorations.

you guys do know...

That radar detectors are detectable by police, and depends where you use it, it is illigal, and you can and probbaly will get charged with using one, or even just having one.
Even the new laser, super duper detectors are not 100% and are detectable.

Slow down, that's your best bet of not getting pulled

Be serious..... Slowing down just isnt an option.
1. If he wanted to slow down he wouldnt have made the post
and
2. If he wanted to drive slow he would have got a civic.

I'm going to get on my soap box again...Do some of you guys realize what the radar detectors really do? They all have limitations, some more than others, but all inherently do. Basically, there are basically 2-3 that are the best. There are 3 basic things to look for when in the market for one:
1. Performance
2. Features/Reliability
3. Price

The police who say that they have the best this and that are all FOS. I was in law enforcement and only the laser is basically fool proof (and even it has limitations) most other radar devices leave the picking out the perp to the officer (this is where the old urban legends of red cars and fast lane traveling come into play). Radar Detectors are all designed not to be bulletproof vest to speed. They are designed to alert you of the presence of radar WHEN IT'S SHOT AT SOMEONE ELSE, get it. If you are on the road at 2 a.m. and it's just you and police on the road and he shoots you with any kind of modern instant on or laser, you're toast even with V1 and my beloved 8500 period. So, if you're going to run even with the best RD, just don't be stupid and think that if you paid $350 for one you can just bust loose. Trust me, sooner or later if you act like an idiot you'll get busted, Radar detector or no.

well, i work for radio crack and have to say they are good for the money. i had the one that talked and did not have the compass. worked pretty damn well. falsed quite a bit, but you can pretty much figure an X band is nothing unless you are in BFE. K/KA are not as common so i know to watch for those. Laser and you're screwed.

i moved on to a V1 because my unlce gave it to me. lets just say i would never go back to one with out the arrows.
