change that gasket and filter dont hold out!!!!simple thing to do I dont it before
If I was you I take off the pan and replace the gasket, ensure you buy the gasket and strainer type filter from the dealer. Autos should be changing their Auto tranny fluid once a year to be on the safe side, but someone else will post ooh no change it every 30K or so. Not my car, do keep in mind oil looses vistosity like coolant etc...
It's my understanding that the screen in the transmission is so large that it wouldn't catch any small particulate matter suspended in the fluid in any event.
I wanted to be thorough and ask the dealer about it since I read about the screen in the Haynes Service Manual and the service department at the two Nissan dealers said that removing the pan and replacing the screen is not necessary.
I have changed my transmission fluid by draining every 30,000 miles with no problems since new, and at 160,000 miles I went and had the entire system flushed of the entire 12 or so quarts for 60.00 or so at the Penske Center, they put Mobil 1 Transmission Fluid in, and I came home that night and drained out as much as I could from the drain plug and installed Castrol Dexron III Synthetic Fluid to top it up.
From now on, I am going to drain and add Synthetic Fluid every 20 or 30,000 miles.
If the drain plug is magnetic then removing the drain plug and looking for metal particles should be enough, but you could go the extra step and drop the transmission pan and check it out.
Could send the fluid you remove off to Blackstone Laboratories. I haven't done this, but I have a sample from just after the flush I was thinking of sending, and I'd like to do this with the oil from my engine as well sometime (178,000 miles and runs like new).
