2. does it matter if the signal light is on the left or right side of the tail?

you do need reflectors and it will all depened on the brightness and the way you make your light. Colour will also affect legality.

Laws may change from state to state as well. Do a search for Federal ones online to help you out with a starting point at least.

Re: Tail Light Laws?

Here is what you have to have to be legal in Washington State:

- 2 red reflectors visible from 100-600 feet at night under properly adjusted high beams
- 2 or more red tail lamps visible from at least 1000 feet at night
- 1 or more red or amber stop (brake) lamp visible from 300 feet in normal sunlight (may be incorporated with other tail lamps)
- 2 red or amber turn signal lamps visible from 500 feet in normal sunlight (may be incorporated with other tail lamps)

Back-up lamps are optional, may be amber or white.

The license plate and bach-up lamps are the only white lights allowed on the rear of the vehicle. Amber or yellow lights may only be used for signal devices. Any other lamp must be red.

Some states' laws are a little more lax, but if you meet these guidelines, you are probably good in any other state too. Still, check local laws before marketing these lights elsewhere.

Also, even if you meet all of the standards, you must still have your design approved by the proper authorities before you can legally sell them.

Thanks for this site. I owe you one. a partner and I were thinking of trying something on my car, and then if it looks good and people like it, we were gonna start making them. But it looks a little more difficult to do. If they are complient and properly built, would it be possible to sell handmade tail lights?

Thanks again.
