How You Know When Time To Change Struts

I have a question, how do you know when its time to change your struts? What should you look for? I was talking to my friend and he said it was 40,000 miles you are supposed to change your struts? Is this true?

Someone please help me and answer that?

thanks

No it's not true. Some members here have over 70K miles on their original shocks.
You know it's time to change shocks when they start leaking or your ride becomes bouncy.

The problem with struts is that they deteroiate slowly over time and it is hard to notice when they are truly gone. Some people can easily were through struts in 40K. If your car is starting to feel like a boat and that taut controlled ride is getting mushy then it is definitley way past time to change them.

I have 106k on my 96 max with stock struts and eibach springs. I have a set of KYB AGX's in my trunk, I know good place for them right. But I dont think my max feels bouncy even at 106K, I just think its time for new struts,

I went 110K miles with my OEM struts/shocks. At that point, driving alone felt fine but when I drove with more people, I noticed the suspension would get "spongy". I could probably keep going another 10-20k or so, but wouldn't be "Enjoying The Ride" as much as I'd like to.

Change them when you notice something like this, or if you just want to improve your ride. But save up--it'll cost you. ~$400 for performance struts, ~$200 for performance springs, ~$100 for additional parts, and then ~$300 for labor. All numbers are averages that are in my opinion, but your actual costs may vary.

I changed the rear struts on my 95 max a few months ago. You can definitely tell when they are completely gone. The car will feel very bouncy, and when going around turns and hitting small bumps, the car will feel like it is going to spin around. It doesnt feel very safe at all.

I kept the stock struts and shocks for the first 120,000 miles.

Then I put Tokico Blues on all the way around that I unfortunately bought from Stillen.

The Tokico Blues are supposed to be guaranteed for the entire life of the car for the original owner.

I now have 179,000 miles on my Max, and I don't think I need shocks, but all of the talk had me thinking about KYB AGX shocks.

I called Stillen to ask them how their warranty worked on the Tokico Blues and they said that you have to send them in for warranty replacement!

What do you think about that?

Look for Feathering on the insides of your tires. If every tread is a different depth, than you need new struts.
