Painted Door Pilars

I want to get the black vinyl off of my door pilars so i can have the paint on there. I took one stirp off, the driver's side door one and it looked horrible cause of all the glue left on from the vinyl. I bought adhesive remover and tried to scrape the glue off, but it doesn't all seem to come off, i still got a lot of glue left on there. Am i doing something wrong or does it just take a lot of adhesive remover & time to get the glue off??

Did you heat up the tape before you removed the vinyl? I heard of people using gasoline, or "GOO-Gone" to take the tack stuff out. Also what color is you max?

I'm not too sure. I think that they will have it, at a hardware store like: Lowes, home depot.

Does the color match the rest of the car? Ive been planning on taking the vinyl off, but im worried that the paint may not match.

I'll try those places. Yeah, the little amount of paint i can see matches perfectly.

Could you post pics of this when it's done? I'm curious to see what it looks like. Good luck!

sorry...but if i remember correctly from earlier posts from people who had done it...they had to really heat it up well and i think for the rest of the glue, they used either goo gone or rubbing alcohol...and of course, fingernails...but i could be wrong since this is coming from memory of reading other threads...but i think goo gone might be your best bet...and i do think most hardware stores have it

Here are two pretty bad pictures but you get the point. You need to pull up some of the weather stripping to get all of the vinyl tape out and in the pics I had yet to re-glue it, that's why it is trapped between the doors.

If you go to an auto body supply store you can buy a "Pinstriper Remover".

It's a tool that looks like a round eraser that goes on the end of a drill/buffing machine.

It removes the glue like butta.

ebmorgan did it to his I30 with my tool. Total time to do it was 2 minutes.

Thanks a lot, i will try it tomorrow and post pics when i'm finished. Yes that black part on the edge of your doors is just a vinyl sticker and the clearcoated paint in underneath.

The pinstripe tool was like 20 bucks, but i figured it was worth it because it can be used not only to remove pinstripes/molding/glue, but as a clay bar also.

You don't need to heat anything up if you use that tool.

It generates it's own heat while spinning against the paint. Just be careful not to do it in one place too long or to put too much pressure on it, or it will burn your paint. (Just move it around frequently while using it, and you'll be fine).

Like I already said, the pinstripe removal tool works best.

ebmorgan borrowed it to do his, and it took 5 minutes to get all the glue off.

Check it out:
