Diffence between 99 and 99.5
actually, there is a difference. i've had a couple of threads about this. anyway, the difference is the y-pipe. the 99s have the normal 4th gen y-pipes whereas the 99.5 use the 2000 y-pipes. i know for sure my car is the 99.5
someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe SE is 99 and SE-L is 99.5
if you're not sure look for little badges just after the front wheel wheels.
KrZyMaX... what kind of y-pipe do you have?

There is no difference between a 99 and a 99.5
The difference in the Y pipe is the Federal Emissions and the Cali Emissions. A lot of 99's were produced with Cali spec Emissions. It's not a 99.5 car, it's a cali spec emissions car. That makes the Y pipe much different. Cali spec has 4 sensors in the exhaust where as federal spec only has 2. The pre cats might be different in the cali spec car as well, but I'm not 100% on that one.

Ummm there is a difference between a 99 and a 99.5 and yes there is a 99.5 (Mine is listed with the Bank as a 99.5 and my insurance lists it as a 99.5)... It would be that all SE-L's are 99.5 and all regular SE's are 99. Some of the SE-L's like my brothers are Fed Spec and some are CA/NLEV like mine. I am not sure if all regular 99 SE's with CA/NLEV have the newer 2k-2k1 Y but all CA/NLEV 99.5's do. Any yes all 99.5 SE-L's have titanium accents, titanium SE-L badges and if you have leather they will be perforated with an embossed SE near the sholders. Please remember just because you have a SE-L does not mean you have a CA/NLEV you may have Fed spec check under your hood for the label saying that it meets California emmisions if it says federal then you do not have CA/NLEV. (unless the hood has been replaced then it could be incorrect)
If you think you have the newer CA/NLEV Y look at the front exhaust manifold you will see a huge 3" Pre-CAT directly connected to it with a heatshield around it. The fed spec version does not have the Pre-CAT directly attached to the Manifold because it is part of the Y pipe.
Look at this pic you can see the very large front Pre-CAT:

And here is a pic from below of the CA/NLEV front Pre-CAT

So for the purposes of buying a Warpspeed Y-pipe for my car (a 99 non-SE-L), it doesn't matter whether I have Fed spec of Cali spec emissions, and I just need the 99 y-pipe (not the 99.5 y-pipe), correct?

You must tell Warpspeed you have a 99 with either California or Federal emissions. The pipes are different depending on your cars Emission Specs. SE or SE-L has nothing to do with the pipe, it's a trim level.
LOL, okay I'm getting confliciting information in this thread.
According to Greg's site, ALL 99 Maxima's with CA emissions require the newer 99/2000 CA Y-pipe design
So with this information, I'd need the updated "99.5/2000" CA y-pipe for my 99/CA, and not the older 95-98 CA design.
So if I have all of this correctly...
ALL 99/CA Max's require the updated 99.5/2k Y-pipe.
ALL 99/Fed Max's still use the OLD 95-98 design Y-pipe.
Is this correct?
And I still have no idea what the hell a 99.5 is. I think it's just a term that WS is using to differentiate the different Y-pipe design
If that's the case, Cattman describes it better. They have:
1995-1998 ANY SPEC y-pipe
1999-2001 CA/NLEV emissions ONLY y-pipe
1999-2001 Fed-spec emissions ONLY y-pipe
But wait, then this means that *ALL* 99's use the updated Y-pipe design and not just the CA/NLEV spec models.
WTF?!!
F*ck it. I'm just going to email them and let them tell me what the hell the differences are. I'll post up the email when I get some replies back.

Although all 1995-1999 Maximas are considered "4th Generation" and for the most part are identical mechanically, the Y-Pipe on the 1999 California Emissions vehicles was an exception. In 1999 Nissan went with a slightly different design for the CA/NLEV Maxima, which the '99 cars share with the 5th-Generation (2000) Maxima, rather than its closer 4th Generation cousin, the '95-'98 Maxima. While all '95-'98 Maxima Y-Pipes are one-piece designs, the '99/2K CA-spec Y-Pipe is a two-piece assembly composed of a rear section and a forward pre-cat which is attached directly to the forward exhaust manifold. Apparently, Nissan was getting a jump on the new exhaust design for the 2000 CA-spec Maxima, and incorporated it into the 1999 model year.
Aftermarket Y-Pipes for the '99/2K CA-Spec Maxima do not replace the forward pre-cat, since it is required in order to maintain the car's OBD II compliance.

Who cares if the 99 shares the same Y pipe as the 2k & 2k1, Just tell them what car your driving and what emissions it's equipped with and you get the correct pipe.
Why is this so hard to understand?

Conversation I recently had with Warpspeed:
ME - Hi, I'm interested in a Y pipe for my Maxima.
Lady @ Warpspeed - OK What year is your Maxima?
ME - 1999
Lady @ Warpspeed - Do you know if you have Federal Emissions or California Emissions?
ME - I have California Emissions on my car.
Lady @ Waprspeed - OK it takes us a little longer to make that pipe for your car - do you want aluminized or SS?
bla bla bla...... Whats so difficult about that?
Is mine 99 or 99.5
I have a 99 or 99.5 SE-L. I don't know if my gauges are titanium or not. They do sparkle a little in direct sunlight. I don't have leather so the perforation thing doesn't work for me as an indicator. I just put on my Warpspeed Y and there were only 2 O2 sensors on the Y pipes, both stock and aftermarket. What I'm gathering from the previous posts is that I have a 99.5. Is this correct?

Bluebird - you have a 1999 Maxima with Federal Emissions.
I give up! Common sense is lacking here these days.

Well, I'm out of here until Monday. Headed to Quaker City Raceway tonight. Hopefully I'm in the 14's! Try not to flame me too bad while I'm gone.
saying "there is no such thing as a 99.5" is not entirely correct. the whole "99.5" title is just a saying to clarify the difference in y-pipes. easiest way to end this confusion is to look at your y-pipe and see how many O2 sensors there are. it's either 2 or 3. if it's 2 then you have a regular 4th generation y-pipe. if there are 3 O2 sensors, then you have a 5th generation type y-pipe. blah.
