I have been noticing a funny noise when i crank the car. I makes a whirr sound after the car starts, when the car sits longer than two hours. Before i go change the starter, anyone have the same problem?

dont worry about it if it is in the cold weather. but if it does it all the time, check all plugs and if that is good and it still has the same problem- get a new starter

Mine does that also once the starter stops. It last for about 1 to 2 seconds. I have not had any other problems from the starter. I have heard other people say the same thing also. I think it is just a weird quirk with are starters. I am not going to worry about it.

i to have the same thing. i don't worry about it too much. in a previous thread someone said that means the starter is going. just yesterday, after sitting for 2 days in the cold, my 96 would not start. i had to give gas when cranking it and then it started

That happened to mine at about 68,000 miles. I replaced the starter and never had a problem with it. It could also be your fuel pressure. Leave the key on the A/C part for like 10sec and then try starting. That raises fuel pressure and helps the starter start the car.

I just recently purchased a 98SE and have noticed a sound that occasionally happens on a cold startup. It could be the starter drive not disengaging fast enough or a belt slipping, it is hard to tell and only lasts 1/2 a second. One of these days I will have my girlfriend start it while I listen under the hood, it is an annoyance right now and doesn't sound serious yet. If it is the starter drive it will eventually get worse but since I have a 5spd I am not going to replace the starter until it has problems starting the car.
