Steady ticking, is it electrical or what?

As I am driving I keep hearing a steady ticking coming from what sounds like under the dash on the driver's side. I know it's not just the average squeak or creak that comes with our cars, it's more of this ticking sound. As I increase in speed so does the sound's frequency, but the thing is, it is always present and it never gets any louder or softer. It is now beginning to aggrevate me so much that I have to stop it. Any ideas what the noise could be or how to stop it?

You don't have any enemies do you?

Tick tick tick tick tick ....BOOM

Seriously, this might sound silly but have you had any exhaust work done? When I put my y pipe on my heat shield was rubbing and it sounded like it was coming from the same area.

Good luck and I hope it is not a bomb.

Sure it's not your lifters?

They "tick" at different speeds according to RPMs on our cars.

It's a feature!

I had that on my car and it was the cruise control making the noise. There is a small box mounted just ahead of the front strut tower on the drivers side. I moved mine and put it on the firewall closer to the center of the car and put all the solenoids etc for my nitrous in that spot. That won't change anything just helps me hide the nitrous stuff.
It is mounted with 3 rubber vibration washers, check to see that its not touching metal to metal anywhere.

The prize goes to 95rubygxe for the correct statement.

Our cars have a bucket and shim setup. It's very efficient and requires almost no maintenance.

I had something similar. I jacked the car up and got underneath and started to move things around until I heard the same sound. It did start right after putting on my Y pipe so i just bent the heat shield slightly up and away from the Pipe.

The ohter thing I thought of: Do you have a cell phone in your car? You will get a ticking noise from a cell phone when it is near your radio.

Just an idea.
