I was reading through old postings... and someone offered this alternative to replacing the Bose... ADDING on to the Bose system with an adapter?

Is this possible and how is it done?

What sort of unit would I have to get?

Has anyone actually done this successfully??

You can add subs onto the Bose with an adaptor.

I guess I was thinking more of adding a mp3 player or minidisc unit... like a head unit...

Yes, it's either you can just add on subs to the stock Bose system or replace everything.
