Who is our greatest rival/enemy?

Out of all the four door sedans produced from the 90s who poses the greatest threat to our "Four Door Sports Car" title?

Every time i see a Grand Pri(k)x with the blower i sneer at them. And the BMW 3-series always put up a decent fight. The Camary/Accord/626 I dont think really scared any 4th gens performance wise. Lets not for get the SHO and its little brother the SVT Contour. Any others out there?

I think of all the other cars listed as being a little different than the max, because of the fact that they had engine options where we had none. They could go for the fast one or the slow one, or in some cases the even slower one. The maxima however didn't have that option, they all have a kick *** engine (95+ models of course).

Are Pontiacs the biggest possibly waste of $20k? I mean, those things just like like they are totally plastic - I laugh every time I see one. What a waste of money....

And their advertising campaigns are truly retarded......

Holden Commodore SS to HSV
Ford Falcon XR6/XR8
3.5 Magna Sport
'94 onwards WRX

Thats the most popular 'everyday' mix from the '90s down here. Then throw in the occasional early Evo or R33 GTSt 4dr and the usual Honda/BMWs.

IS300 for stock. i got an auto my friend has a '01 but it pulls pretty nice. they are a lot heavier than ours, but they got rwd. but... as soon as you put a pipe on or an intake, no prob. 5speed should have them.

Show me a 14.1-second timeslip for a naturally aspirated modded Acura Type II 6 speed or auto and I'll agree, until then I'll still believe the 4th gen 5 speed with simple bolt-ons is quicker and faster. I've raced Type IIs and while they're quick, they are still not quick enough. Don't forget that the 4th gen Maxima is about 300lbs lighter. Power to weight is a *****.

Nah, I owned 4 of them over the weekend. The big midwest SVT Contour SHO Taurus meet was in my town this weekend, every one that tried me got taken. One race I took out 2 of them at once on a 3 lane road on the way to the AutoX. They were all cool guys though.

Ditto on Dave B's statement. Once I see a 14.1 second I/Y/E Legend I'll be a believer. Or a 14.2s second I/Y Legend, or a 14.3s Y-pipe only Legend. Until then, I still consider them owned.

328i 5-spd is pretty much as fast as a 4th gen 5-spd maxima.

If this qualifies... since they both have the new 3.5L VQ cranking out 255 & 260hp, the G35, I35 & the 2K2 Max's would seem like threats

Civics...TL's....GTP's? Ha....yeah, Legends with the 6spd, I'll give you...only how many have I seen in the past five years? One, and I drove, and worked on it. But if you're talking about rival 4door perf. cars that we see on the road and bang against....you say jap cars, I say S4. I see the same yellow 6spd every weekend on the highway..same modded exhaust note and blowoff valve...still able to kick my tail whenever it wants. But it feels good to know he spent $40K+ on it, and I spent 1/4 on mine. But get this story: One night I was driving towards Chicago, and I'm running with this blue S4 through I94 traffic. We exit together, and at the red, he honks at me. He asks if I had a blower, because I kept right up with him. He said he had a max, supercharged it, loved it, blew up the motor. I said nice car about his S4, and he gave a so-so look. I asked im if he'd rather have my max, and he gave me a hell-yeah. What do you think about that?

Volvo, yes VOLVO

Greastest Rival?

I know its kinda cheating, but I have to say a 1998 Volvo S70 T-5, (1997 850R also). They only came in autotragic for 98, but they are a turbocharged-236hp-5 cylinder sleeper just waiting to eat max's and most other things. Off the line the N/A Max will leave him behind, after about 2 seconds his turbo is spooled and he just runs away. Not walking on you, but running It is a most depressing sight. It also sounds really cool when it has downshifted WOT at about 5500RPM, the turbo is really angry.

In terms of luxury (yah I know its more expensive) its nice inside, all sorts of airbags (it is a volvo after all) and has a pretty good stereo probly on par w/ the BOSE.

Some more food for thought.... when he loaded up his torque converter when racing me...he stayed even, almost dead even, until his turbo kicked and then left me looking at his tail lights.

Also, is the 4-DR Integra GS-R in the running at all? Totally different approach to speed,(8750 redline anyone?) but so much fun to drive.
