Alternators for the 4 gen maxima are NOT interchangable!

I thought that the alternators for the 4th generation were interchangeable. But i was wrong. I got an alternator that came off of a '99 maxima ( i have a '97) and i went thru the torture of installing it myself... placed on a new alternator belt as well. And the next day while driving home from work my belt ripped. Found out that the alternator that i got has only 4 "teeth" on the pulley while my old one has 5. So i guess since the belt didnt fit as snug as it should on the pulley it started ripping the belt.

Useful information...

But... You didn't notice that the pulleys were different when you installed it???

1. put the old pulley on the new alternator.

2. buy a new belt.

3. problem solved.

the late 99's seem to be outkasts out of the entire 5th gen family...... most stuff is "hot swappable" between the 95 to early 99's

honestly i didnt really pay much attention and compared the two. It was getting dark outside and I just wanted to get it on. The alternator itself looks identiacal. The pulley however was slightly smaller... than the original. It was easily missed. Would it be easiy to change the pulleys?

The 99 Maxima was a funny one because Nissan was toying with stuff for 2000 on that car. Inter-changeability of parts between a 99 Max with 95-98 is kinda iffy.

You said "how swappable"

You've worked on Compaq's, and you're in IT.
