Just curious, who would win between a 5 spd 4 gen (even auto) and a is300 if both were stock.

Speaking from actual experience...

My stock auto '96 vs. a friend's stock IS300... he came out on top by about half a car length. But it was a fun race. It might be even with a 5-spd, or maybe my friend just doesn't know how to drive?

Anyway, I've driven it. It doesn't seem much faster than a 4th gen Maxima.

Keep in mind that you are on a maxima forum so the outcome might be a little biased. Someone had a great suggestion about going out and actually test driving the car. I think you will find that the is300 is built pretty solid and has a luxary car feel to it. Plus you will impress a lot of folks simply with the lexus name. It's true it lacks the hp but the car still feels fast.

I just think nissan build quality is a little suspect. I'm thinking in a couple years the signs will start to appear. Rattles, shakes, etc. Infinity might be a different story. The two cars you really should be comparing are the g35 and the is300. And from what someone said earlier, the g35 is a bodykit, lowering springs, and rims away from being a really hot car.

Neither. 2003 6sp Infiniti G35. If you must choose between the two, I say Maxima hands down - haven't heard too many good things aboutt hat IS300, although, like most others, I like its look.

The IS300 has a unique to itself unibody and shares the front and rear subframes with the GS300/430 and drivetrain with the GS300. It is available in stick but only in a five speed. The car is nice cause it's all whell drive but it's a complete peice of crap inside. The NAV system sucks, it's not even a touch screen. It isn't fast and it's very small inside. I worked for Lexus for 4 years and I could have leased one for 200 a month with no money down. I chose a Maxima instead. I would look into 2002 6spd or a G35 coupe 6spd. I drove a four door the other day and their performance is amazing!

get the lexus b/c of higher resale value, looks.

get the max b/c of speed, more room inside.

don't get anything used b/c for that amount of $$$$ you should have something brand spanking new.

Re: Re: One more vote for the Max

Well, when I went for another car, I did not want to lose anything I have in my Max. That is space, HP, auto climate, heated leather seats, bose system and style. The Lex had cloth (standard which surprised me), no bose, no auto climate and of course I was losing space.

i really don't like the is300. the rims are nice, but the car is just too oddly shaped. it looks like someone took a section out of it. hold out for the 2003's, and get the v8 in that ****. that would be my choice. but, then again, who am i?

I vote Maxima. Lexus was trying too hard with the IS300. I was so excited when it was announced and swore I'd get one. Then they came out...I'll keep my 'slow' 99 max until I can justify a new one.

Not sure where you are, but in Pennsylvania I priced a Loaded SE (without Nav) at $28,200. Long term, parts and upgrades will be cheaper.

You asked for opinions...now there's one less you need to collect. Good Luck. Frankly you cant go wrong either way...

I still think you should really look into the G35. It'd only be a few thousand more expensive than the Maxima...

Stay Max. Toyota/Lexus way over rated/over priced. I don't know how the dealers can be so proud of their cars (not that special).

Not quite a 4-door, but that new CL-S 6-speed is sweet. If they ever put the 6-speed in the TL-S, I'll say bye bye to my Maxima!

As far as the IS300 goes, it just isn't "masculine" enough. I can almost classify it as a "girl's car."

Well, Both cars r prety crazy.
The 2k2 max is tight as F***
the IS is also tight. If you want to go with the name, go with teh lex. But if you want something that is better quality, better interior, better engine, faster, blah blah, then go with the max. and the IS should cost a lot more than the max. I would personally go with the max.

They ARE putting one in the TL-S, in fact I think it is out or coming out in 2003. I totally agree that is one sweet car, but I'm not giving up my max until the next gen S4 comes out with a bi-turbo 8cyl

I dont know how you call a 4th gen a POS. They're solid cars. I love mine. And if you're smart, you can save alot of money buying a used car that will last a long time. I like my $10,000 car alot better than the 2000 and 2001 models and I don't have to worry about decreasing its resale value by modding it. And the 323 is lame. At least get a real BMW.

As far as I know Toyota/Lexus are not part of GM. GM is the #1 automaker nthe world, Toyota is #3, they are not the same. Yes, they have made cooperative efforts to build cars in the past Prizm/Corolla for example, but they are two totally different companies. GM has no influence on how Toyota builds cars and if you haven't noticed, GM's cars are horribly unreliable and Toyota's cars are extremely reliable. If they were the same company how would this be the case? If anything Toyota is is the largest foreign THREAT to GM.

Good, I'm not the only one who think Audi's are pretty much overpriced and overrated cars.

Tough call...

I have a 99 SE Limited and love it, but the real question may be, do you want front wheel drive or rear wheel drive? Then, there's the question of resale value. My guess is that the Maxima will win out in that department.

I hear rumors that the new 2k3 max will have an available v8. Basically its gonna be a stretched new Altima with all the appointments. Its chassimate is already out... that new big infinity. I'm definitly gonna wait for it, and if I were you I'd wait to see what its gonna be all about.

Have a little patience, the rumor mill is saying that the '03 Max will be a v8, no telling what other goodies it might pack....with that mentioned, you can probably get a great deal on a '02 if the price is out of your budget for the '03.

Actually the IS300 is RWD. The 5-speed is almost fast as a 5th gen max (pre2k2) but it will handle waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than any Max. My roommate has one and I cornered a lot harder in that Lexus than I would even attemp in my Max. However, for the price, it isn't worth it. Interior looks something out of a fisher price catalogue. Get the Max.
