What is overdrive?

I Realize that driving with OverDrive OFF increases my RPM dramaticallly. However, driving with it on in the freeway, decreases my RPM dramatically.

What is the difference between driving WITH OverDrive and WITHOUT overdrive?

Do I save more gas with O/D on or off? Does having O/D off make the car accelerate faster? How about in the long run? Does it matter?

OD OFF-4th gear locked, stays in 3rd
OD ON-4th gear opens

there's also something about the torque converter, but i forgot which way it goes, and i'm too lazy to think

with OD off, it just allows you to use 3rd gear to the full potential, accelerating faster

Does anyone turn off their OD. If so for what.

I would doubt that holding OD off would be beneficial unless you are doing high speed racing (where you'd need full revs in 3rd gear). If anyone thinks that it affects 0-60 acceleration, its all in your head.
So in otherwords, I dont think there is any reason to turn it off for daily driving.
Its basically like take the 5th gear out of a manual.

there is no benefit in 0-60...the only real reason i can think of as to turning off OD is when you are in traffic that keeps shifting between speeds around 40-60...so that your transmission doesn't keep shifting between 3 and 4, you can turn OD off and it keeps it in 3rd, saving the gear changes...but it is really only useful to turn off in racing as AdMax said, or just trying to obtain your overall max speed

Keeping OD ON increases your MPG as well, or so the manual says

Hey, when you guys drive about 30 or 40 on the streets, does your car feel like it's not strong enough to pull 4th gear when OD is on. I feel my engine shakes a little as I give it a little bit of gas in 4th while going 30 to 40.
