Hey Tom
You are not going to buy a catfish car are you. I always thought the car looks like a catfish. Ya know when you look at clouds in the sky and imagine images. Go with the I-30, max, or Acura TL and stay away from domestic.
Oh yeah I will have a pic of my valet switch later.

Are you insane!?

- That "vehicle" may be reasonably quick in a straight line, but a V-8 coupled with front wheel drive equals one inevitable thing: UNDERSTEER. Besides, it's a domestic. As patriotic as I am, America does not build many high-quality cars. My family has owned many domestics and they have all given us many, many headaches. Save your handling and future maintenance hassles and stick to a Maxima.

nismomaxse97 = sweet dreamcar man

tommyboisxty9 = heresy, pure unadulterated heresy stick with your max, i have the Domestic car story from hell...

in 95 i bought a brand new DODGE AVENGER SE...
sweet a*s car, loved driving it and taking anyone on (before i knew better) in 97 blew the tranny, few months later electrical went haywire, and 98 engine blew up going 65 on the new jersey turnpike and i missed my Animal Behavior final at my college. Still not considered a lemon and i later bought my Maxima SE with a little help from my parents (didn't get much for the trade in on an almost new DOMESTIC from hell.)

peace

Argh..an Aurora???

In 1995, there was a comparo in Road and Track between the Aurora, ES300, I30t, Millenia S, and A6. And the Aurora was last place in that comparo. They said that out of the five cars, the Aurora handled the worse...and it must handle horrible if it was beaten by a Camry..err.. ES300.

I would say skip the Aurora and look towards a reliable Japanese car instead.

It took alot of CRACK to convince you....Because it's a FAT PIG!!

Yes the OLDS does strightline well.
But thats about the only good thing about it.
A Max is as quick and much lighter on its feet, so it's much more fun to drive.
Try taking an exit ramp or a cloverleaf at 80 mph in that OLDs FAT PIG and see how you feel.
It is a cumbersome vehicle compared to a a lightweight MAX.
Slightly more room in rear and definatley more ugly.
People will mistake you for the elderly.
If there is one thing that GM does well -ITS BULL S&%#.
That's a big fat Buick buddy. - It's an overwieght weight beast - and this is to say nothing of the reliability.
Because its at the bottom of the barrel.-
Don't get me wrong -I love the old American big displacement engines. They are fun -TORQUE GALORE.
But GM employs engineers who majored in shop in high school.
Nissan's engineeres actually went to college.

My friends mom bought the sebring coupe which is the cousin of the avenger and the transmission was bad less than 200 miles off of the lot. I could not believe it, but it reinforced my decision to stay away from domestic forever.
My life is short and I do not want to remember it driving a domestic rattle box.

About all it has over the MAx is it uses more fuel. It's slower (I raced one 0-100 and killed it), handles worse, loses it's value FAST and just doesn't hold up as well in consistent "spirited driving". BUT to each their own. If you buy it we'll be seeing you in our rear view mirror!

Yeah, I had some impure thoughts of my own....

Though certainly not about an Aurora....the only American sedan that did anything for me lately was the Buick Riveria. Friend had one...looked sweet, supercharger gave it some good scoot.

So I got on this kick...first went to Audi dealer....salivated over an S4 (so small, though)....they had one with 20k miles and a 320hp chip there. They didn't have an S4 available for test driving (unless you signed a bunch of "prequalification" crap) but I did take an A4 2.8 Quattro out. Very fun car....definitely handled better than my Maxima (see below for mods). Then again, the S4 is a little pricey (though a better deal than a BMW...you can barely get a 330i with sport/luxury package for the price of an S4!)

Then I test drove a CL Type S. A little boring looking, nice acceleration for an automatic...but overall, a little too bland to justify getting a new car.

Looked at Volvo S60 T6...well, they didn't have T6's on the lot that night, but the S60 body is very attractive. From what I've read, the handling doesn't compare to BMW/Audi.

After doing all this, decided that the Maxima is still a pretty nice, well-balanced car....thinking more and more about H&R/Koni.....

Well Jamie, if the above mentioned cars were your impure thoughts. At least, those cars were worth mentioning. However, an Aurora??? Reminds me of a whale.

Or you can always...

do what I saw some riceboy did to his Aurora:

Put a Type R badge on the back and some powered by VTEC stickers on both sides of the car and you're ready to go!

I couldn't stop bursting out in giggles for the rest of the day cause the image kept popping up in my head.

Me too.

Getting sick of fixing my "new" Maxima. (Rotors, TCM, tranny slippage, bumper scratch issue, etc.) I'll never by a new redesigned model again or possibly Nissan. The Aurora is one of few American cars I would buy. The V8 is version of Cadillac's Northstar V8, which is a great design, not your typical pushrod. I probably won't do anything until 2002 though. I'm way too upside down right now. I'm considering Passat, Suburu, and the upcoming TL2-S.

The first few years of Auroras had terrible reliability issues. Lots of recalls, and they fell apart easily. And I don't mean insignificant things like most Maximas have. Auroras are terrible cars.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

My cousin has a nice 97 black on black Aurora with chrome rimes and gold trim....(same cousin with the Q45)

First off....it eats gas like crazy. The best i got in NYC was around 12 miles a gallon (on premium)...and that was not being aggressive. I took a few trips to L.I and got 17 on the highway. I know this cause the trip computer measures gas mileage.

Anyways i can't tell you how many times i put it into sport mode (allows rpm to go higher before shift) and tried to race a maxima........damn did i ALWAYS get my *** kicked.
yes its 250hp but the thing is heavy.

On the good side it is comfortable....and has alot of standard options.

BUT i would not get it. I have driven the aurora many times.......and it does not show me that it is such a great bargain.

plus as it was said before.....there is something about imports.

Also.....if you wanna spend 16 go get a 94-95 Q45...you could get one with around the same mileage..(a little higher).
they got a V8 with 278hp.....and they are fun to drive.
(remember my cousin has one) also rear wheel so no wacked torque sterrr...
yes also slower than a max...but you can't go wrong with a Q.

I went through an agonizing 6 months and a huge list of cars to come down the the finalists and bought the Maxima on an overnight whim because it had all the right stuff and a smashing price. The Aurora and Olds Intrique where high on my list as well. The Aurora has a very rigid chasis, a bullet-proof Northstar based engine and tons of amenities. Downside was the mass...2 tons...that's right almost 1,000 pounds heavier than my sweet 98SE. Gas bill would have been hideous and I would not have the agility I enjoy in crappy Dallas traffic. The Aurora is extreemly tempting based on price, I saw a 99 model on the dealer floor this summer with a sticker of $38k. I found several used 99's with about 20k miles for about $20k, that is an amazing value. The Intrique is also a great buy, very high quality for a domestic car(think micro-brew where most domestic cars of the 80's-90's are the Coors lite) and another varient of the Northstar. I drove a new Intrigue around Dallas for 4 days and was very impressed. In some ways it beat the Maxima....GASP! Of course it only comes with a slushbox auto and it has a crappy kickdown at freeway speeds that can scare you. I am still very happy with my new(to me) Maxima and would buy another in a heartbeat. You just can't beat a 5 speed and a silky 6 cylinder for fun. The only car that came close in my test drives was a 97 BMW 328 IS. It was sweet sweet sweet, the classic rear drive inline 6 coupe and it made all the right noises. I bought my Maxima only hours after driving that sweet Bimmer and the price diff was almost 9 grand. The Maxima deals are out there, case the dealerships and find a nice 5 speed car, then ***** about it not having an auto and see if they will knock a grand or two off hehe. I know a lady(years ago) who did this....she had always wanted a BMW 735 with a stick. When she found it she complained and nearly walked out the door till the dealer offered her a sweet deal for the inconvenience of a sedan with a stick......
