Can a faulty Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor cause hesitation/surging
Hi Everyone,
I just got done installing my new ECTS because the MIL light came on yesterday and it turned out that I had ECTS and Knock Sensor codes set. After installing ECTS, I took it out to test for any leaks and the first thing I noticed was that the slight hesitation/surging my engine used to experience between 1500 and 2500 rpm is completely gone. Could that hesitation be due to a failing ECTS??
I got the ECTS code a year ago and then six months ago again. Both times I cleared it and it never came back on. This time I cleared it but it came back on within two engine start ups.
Also, I am thinking of replacing the thermostat as my car has 137K miles and I am beginning to see that temp guage drop while driving on highways vs. streets and it takes the temp gauge slightly longer to get up to the 1/2 mark. How difficult is that and is there anything I need to be careful about. I am scared I am going to get coolant into the alternator as it is just below the place the thermostat is. I am not thinking of draining the coolant as that seems to be a big pain. Has anyone ever changed their t-stat and did a lot of coolant spill during the removal/installation.
Thanks

MY CEL JUST CAME ON TOO AND THE TEMPERATURE CONTROL SENSOR AND KNOCK SENSOR LIGHT WENT ON, SHOULD I CHANGE IT , IS THAT DEFINATLLY THE PROBLEM , I CALLED NISSAN DEALER AND TECHNICIAN SAID IT COULD BE OTHER SENSORS EVEN IF YOUR KNOCK SENSOR LIGHT WENT ON , I THINK HE WANTS ME JUST TO COME IN TO PAY THE $90 HR LABOR TO FIND OUT WHAT IT REALLY IS, HAVE YOU CHANGED YOUR KNOCK SENSOR?
NOTICE ANY DIFFERENCES?
SHOULD I CHANGE MINE ANYWAY?
THANKS SORRY FOR STUPID QUESTIONS

i've been having trouble similar to this for a while now also. my CEL has been giving me the KS and ECTS code.
the ECTS was $25 at Autozone and a cinch to install...i just did it today. i had to remove 2 small pieces of my air intake to get to it, but that took no time at all. an adjustable open-ended wrench was all that is needed to remove the sensor and put the new one in. the hardest part was probably getting the wire harness off the old sensor.
anyhow, the CEL is gone for now, so i'm hoping the KS isn't actually bad. perhaps it was just throwing a code due to knock caused by the faulty ECTS giving me a bad fuel/air mixture. any ideas anyone?
also, i didn't have any sealant handy to put on the ECTS when i put it in. anybody think this will hurt much?
