What effect do disconnected O2 sensors have?

Well, I disconnected my right O2 sensor and the hesitation is gone and my MPG have already dramatically increased.

I'm not getting the Check Engine Light, and I think it's because the circuit has a short somewhere. I changed my Seat Belt idiot light bulb into the CEL socket and it no longer worked. Neither did the CEL bulb I moved into the Seat Belt idiot light socket. So I have no idea if I'm throwing codes.

Will a disabled O2 sensor DAMAGE my car? Will the car rely on the air/fuel mix it's programmed with -- the one it uses at wide open throttle?

Get new bulbs for the CEL and Seat Belt Idiot light. A short will not blow those bulbs, there 12 volt bulbs. Put 12 volts across them, they light up! Pretty simple theory. Your car only has 12 volts in it. A short will cause them not to light but will blow a fuse or damage the ECU.

But my point was that I moved a working bulb into the socket and it no longer worked. What would cause that? If a fuse were blown, wouldn't the entire guage cluster fail?

Disconnecting the 02 sensor is supposed to give you bad mileage but I swear it seems like it makes the car run faster without it.

That's a good point, but I actually disconnected it after running the car for a while with both O2 sensors connected. If something were wrong with one of them, I'd expect it to throw codes.

So I guess running with an O2 sensor disconnected is OK as long as my MPG stay up?

Now my concern is with the circuit the CEL is on...

I can't see how you could disconnect a sensor without setting the check engine light.

Did you check the ECU for codes?

Yes. Not only is it not lighting on its own, but I also checked the ECU to see if I could GET a code from it. Nothing. Just a blank stare.
