Lazy Tachometer

When I stat my Maxima and start driving the tachometer works for about 2 minutes. After the 2 minutes are gone the tachometer reads about 2000 RPM off. The only way I can test this is to redline the beast and determine how far off it is.

I know that this is not normal so if any of you have had this occur before or have an idea of what is causing this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

mine did something similar but it would run from 2k-3k off what it should be, then one day it started having seizures lol would erratically jump from not working at all to running all the way to 8k and then back off and at random times..
I wish i would have known when it was going to happen so i could have taken a pic lol.
it turned out to be a bad gauge cluster or at least the tach shorting out and malfunctioning. i got another cluster and it stopped immediately

First, check the TAM screw on the back of the cluster. This is the tach signal into the gauge. For some reason these screws tend to loosen up over time (not uncommon for the speedo to do this, and throw VSS codes), they just need to be tight.

If it's still acting up, replace the tach (just the gauge itself, unless you want to swap the entire cluster). A couple of clips to get the front trim off of the cluster, then 3 or 4 screws and it pops right out.

Are there solder joints for the tach like there are for the speedometer? The problem sounds like it could be a bad connection.
