My Mom has the Grand Prix GT. I drive it all the time. She doesn't pump gas so I take it and fill it for her and I always borrow it when my car is getting work done on it (getting hail damaged repaired right now
). Anyway, I think the cars are very well matched. The Maxima definetly likes to go with little pedal movement. The Grand Prix on the otherhand needs quite a bit of pressure on the pedal to get moving, but if you floor it, she will go! I know the Grand Prix definetly can handle the hills with a lot more ease than the maxima. In low gears I also think the Grand Prix has the Max in the getting up to speed department. At hiway speeds, I would say the max all the way! Just my experience and on a side note, the max is much more fun to drive, more comfortable (both have leather and all options) and MUCH quieter and less rattly and sqeeky. If you factor that in, who cares about speed. Although the max wouold be great with the heads up display. That thing is great!

They are like high 7's to 60 so it will be close for the Auto Max. He might get you initially because they have great low end but you will pass him at about 35 mph or so and he want catch ya!

I'd say if you're bone stock that the GP may be more than a handful for you.

Who knows? Your buddy's '97 might have been built on an early morning Monday or a late afternoon Friday after the union workers got done drinking their lunch.

I wouldn't worry too much about your car. There is almost a 25hp difference between the '97 and the '01 Firebird (Or as we like to call them: TransCamero). Plus he might not have been completely stock/ different driver/ etc. Could've been almost anything. The only differences that I've noticed was the claimed HP between the two.

MAX2000JP had a loner 4th gen auto a few months back and we ran it against my brothers Grand Prix GT. From a roll they are DEAD EVEN....all the way up to the GT's speed limiter at 108. From a dead stop...the GT CONSISTANTLY puts about a car and a half on the max in first gear...and then holds it.
We also ran my brothers GT against Chi99Limited's auto max when he had intake and y-pipe....same result out of a light....but by 70mph the I/Y auto max is passing the Grand Prix....

I know of granb am gt's that run low 17's where i am, and i run 16.5 with my max so i would say that if the grand am and gp gt are same as performance, that you should beat him.
