air temperature sensor
I know there have been some arguments of the air temperature sensor and how it reports to the ecu and so on..... I just thought I'd tell a short little story. I installed a weapon-r intake on my 97SE and I was very disappointed. But after about a week I noticed the first few minutes before engine temperature gauge went up my max would scream down the road. I happened to notice that my air temp gauge was resting right next to the block. So it was getting a cool reading until the engine heat soaked the sensor. I put the sensor in the proper place and it runs strong all the time.

If you make the Max think the air is hotter than it really is, your car will run lean. If you make the Max think the car is colder than it really is, it will run rich. I don't think that's good in the long run.

Yeah... if you're rich you'll cook your catalytic convertor.
If you're too lean you can melt holes in the pistons....
All given time of course...

I put the sensor in the weapon r cold air intake tubing right before the foam filter. I simply poked it through since the entire ram air isn't hooked up all the way but just getting it away from the warm engine made a difference.
