5th gear + 3k RPM = speed?

1996 Maxima SE; I was driving on the highway for the first time in my maxima and i was wondering if it was normal to be driving 75 mph in 5th gear w/ 3k RPM. The reason i ask this is because on my '89 celica, i can do 85 mph and be in 3k RPM... and that's a 4 speed w/ overdrive. Thanks

Sounds fine to me. The celica's auto was widely spaced in comparison.

Heh...if I can remember right, in my 91 integ, when I was in 5th at 70mph, it ran at 4k rpms. Talk about short gearing...

Yup dead on. My motorcycle tachs at 4000 rpm at 75 but then again redline is at 11,500. Every car is different and it depends on gear ratios. The higher rpms in the hwy helps the Max with "roll-ons" and adds to its quickness at higher speeds.
