Better tires on front or back

Contrary to what you might think, you want the better tires on the rear. It all has to do with wet handling. If you put the tires with deeper tread on the front (regardless of which are the drive wheels) the fronts will have vastly more grip than the rear in the rain. This means that even low speed turns can result in snap-oversteer, sending you into the bushes.
Until you can afford to get the 2nd pair of new tires, keep the good ones on the back.

I made the mistake of putting the better tires on the back for my FWD celica... woo understeer all the way down the moutain side... but i put kumho 712's on all four wheels afterwards so my bro (inherited my car when i got my max last week) enjoys the advantages of a better tires.
