Re: Grease on my rims and wheel well

Today I look at my driver side rim and I saw something greasy on it so I looked behind it and the whole wheel well was covered in grease and the parts behind the discs.

Could it be my C V Joint Boot that is bad ?

Is this something that I can do myself or should I take it to a shop because I heard that this isn't a big deal to do ?

If it is the CV axle, you most likely need to do one of two things.

1) Replace the CV boots with a kit from a dealer.

2) Replace the whole CV axle with a new or re-manufactured one.

I highly urge you to replace the whole CV axle with a re-manuafactured one because after the hassle of having to buy a CV boot kit, having you or a mechanic do the installation, and having to pay for the mechanics time, you might as well just get a re-man. axle. Also, on the re-man. axle, the bearings "ought" to be new, unlike yours that could still be dirty from the dirt that got in the old CV boot while it was busted.

Also, with the remanufactured axles, they usually offer a 1-2 year warranty. I had two bust on me within a weeks time, but they were replaced for free because they were covered under warranty. However, with the CV boot kit, there is no warranty on you or your mechanics quality of workmanship on the installation of the kit.

If you can break loose the axle nut, then it's no big deal. I think that's the hardest part.

Yes, IMO the nut is the hardest part. I think the torque specs on it is like 180 lbs (don't quote me). Breaker bar and a pipe work wonders though. From there its about as hard as legos, unless you do the boots yourself. So if your mechanically inclined and have at least a couple of tools laying aroung (you'll probably need to buy the socket for the axle nut its huge) then buy an axle and DIY.
