YOu'll probalby win, but not by much. The chipped GTI's are more of a contender than one owuld think.

Back in 97 I bought a new Jetta GT. Same thing as the GTI, but with 4 doors and a trunk.

In stock trim, it was S-L-O-WWWWW.....
I chipped it with a Newspeed chip, and it was still S-L-O-WWWW......
I put a Techtonics cat-back on it, and it was still W-A-YYYY S-L-O-W.....

I got so sick of it being S-L-O-WWWWW, that I traded it in for an Expedition. (It too, was S-L-O-WWWW....)

I now drive a 95 SE 5 speed, and couldn't be happier.
I couldn't ask for a better daily driver (I put over 50 miles a day on her).

Race the GTI....you would get a good chuckle.

today, i destroyed a golf...just exhaust on it.....he didnt wanna race me, but then when the light turned he took off ...within 3 seconds i was already putting cars on him before we had to shut it down......im not too worried about the gti anymore....he ran a 16.1 on the gtech, and dynoed (dyno only the gtech can do ) at 176hp, but thats because my friend fudged up bad and put the MAXIMUM cars weight instead of how much the car itself weighs + driver....rofl.....he shoulda put 2750, he put 3400 .....

2002 gti
you should definetly be able to beat him. my friend has a 2002 GTI that is chipped. i have a stock 97 stick GXE. I hang with him and barely lose. He has the 1.8 turbo so his car is pretty fast.

The 96 GTI (non VR6) has the 2.0L 4banger. Like someone already stated, 115 hp 122 tq. They are slow. Real slow. Like he'd be lucky to run a 16.9 slow. All his mods probably brought him up to 125hp and 130 tq. You will destroy him.

as long as its not a 1.8T chipped, you have no problem. And since its a 96, it cant have the 1.8T. And you already said is not a VR6, so to me it sounds like you will hand his *** to him.

My friends got a 96 GTI (the purplish colored one) and he's got the 2.0 slow SOHC 8 valve with a 5 speed. He has neuspeed intake, chip, exhaust and coilovers. Well let me tell you this, he STILL runs consistently in the 17s. With one or two good runs in the high 16s. The MPH is at like 80 MPH. You'll blow him away, but he will most likely out corner you. But no matter your acceleration will match. Those things are incredibly slow. However, apparently some guy has turbo charged and built one of those motors up and is running high 12s now.
