Engine Pinging / Knocking

Any of you guys have problems with engine pinging or knocking on the 3.5 engines? I have an Altima with the 3.5 and many others have complained about the same problem. Just trying to see if its common with the Maxima as well. It occurs at around 1900 rpm under load. Please advise.

Thanks!

Gas octane? Valve adjustment maybe.

I have noticed an occasional light pinging on my 2K2 Maxima auto when the AC is on. I always use premium gas so I don't think that is the issue.

Sometimes the gas you get is not as good as what the pump says it is.
Be aware of where you get your gas and if you get alittle pinging then try a different brand. I don't know if the Alitma's have a digital knock sensor like the Maxima, but your knock sensor may need to be replaced too.

VQ30dek on 2k and 2k1 has few cases of knocking. there is a TSB for that repair of replacing ignition coils. check out our TSB thread for more info.

I had this problem on my Y2K SE for more than a year. Finally, local dealer agreed to replace all 6 ignition coils. It's gone now!
Don't listen anybody who says it's a bad gas. It can not be a bad gas, cause ignition moment is self adjustable, depending on a gas octane number. It's an engine problem. Ask your dealer to fix it!

My 2k had bad knocking pinging under load and with the a/c running. I put the service bulletin # that I used for the warranty. Since getting the new coilpacks, it is a totally different car.

TSB for it as NTB01-059

I had the pinging problem also on my 2000 GXE. I finally got the dealership to look at it and they agreed to replace all 6 coils.

By the way, it is an awesome performance mod for free.

I had this TSB done on my 2k. What would happen, specifically:

Under an engine load or slight exceleration...the engine would hesitate or knock.

Unfortunately, the coils took a while and were on backorder. This was prior to the TSB being announced and I had to wage a battle with Nissan to get it done.

Easiest way to test the coils, and the way in which I was able to replicate the problem with the dealer:

Go to a large hill, preferable a long incline....and try to hold an your car at 2500rpm going uphill. Car should maintain its rpm and speed without hesitation or knocking. If it does miss, you will really notice it.

Well guys, I spoke to NNA in Cali and they admit having some issues with this problem. Its probably like you all are saying.. the coils but they havent offically said it yet. Its too new a problem for them to correct. We have a coil recall for radio noise and static problems but not for pinging.... atleast not yet. My pinging is heard at 1900 rpm with a load.. especially if power braked. I still enjoy the car and would like to see improvements in the future. Anyone here know what the new Maxima is going to look like for 2004?

Nissan ignition coils suck. I had all 6 of mine replaced at ~16K and my wife had all 6 of hers replaced at ~40K. AFAIC, Nissan has NO EXCUSE regarding the sh!tty quality of their ignition coils. They've had three model years to figure out the problem and they haven't done so yet. My bet is that the 2003s will exhibit the same problem as well.

These photos were debunked a long time ago! The car shown is not Maxima, it's an Infiniti (can't remember the model).
