hesitation auto 2002

When in 4th gear, 40+ mph. If I take my foot completely off the gas to
coast (ie, in and out of traffic), then step back on the gas, it does a
little "hiccup" thing - not really a hesitation, as for a split second you
feel acceleration, but then you feel a slight hesitation, then off you go
steady. Like it can't make up its mind to go or not go. If I just let off
the gas slightly/enough to coast, and then push forward, notice nothing but
smooth acceleration. Lower speeds/gears, doesn't do it
Anybody else experience this or has any ideas what's going on?

How many miles? You might want to check the trans fluid and the spark plugs. I'm pretty sure that there may be other types of culprit but that's all I can think of right now.

I think Nissan has some bugs to fix in their "drive-by-wire" implementation and this this probably yet another manifestation of it. Hopefully we'll see some fixes soon.

Seems to me your TC is unlocking and the tranny is downshifting to a lower gear.

Do the same maneuvers but keep your shifter at 3. I bet you won't experience the "problem".

2002 Hesitation

There are many people with the same problem. Search for 2k2 hesitation and you will see. Also see my threads and Maxmann's thread.

I'm pretty familiar with the hesitation. But the initial post said "hiccup" - not hesitation.

I think the 2k-2k1's have the same problem where the ECU cuts fuel for emissions reason around 35-40mph

ITS REALLY HARD TO MAINTAIN A FRIGGEN SPEED AROUND THERE

as far as i can tell, its not a hesitation or a fuel cut, its the fact that in high gear that is the speed at which the torque converter locks and unlocks. so, when you're cruising at 40 and let off the gas, the TC locks up, but when you then press the gas again, it unlocks, giving the little hiccup. my 2k1 does the same thing. its absolutely 100% normal, it just is unfortunate that the lockup speed is such a common cruising speed so that you always notice. I personally just turn O/D off if i'm goign to be cruising 40ish for awhile, then there's never a problem...
