Service Engine Soon???
Any ideas why this light is illuminated on my 2K with 5600 miles? There have been no engine mods done to this car. Should I try the disconnect the battery reset method or should I let the dealer check it out?
If you haven't done any mods then there may in fact be a problem that the ECU found. It's still under warranty right? Just take it to the dealer and have them check it out. A Maxima with no mods should NOT be setting off the MIL at only 5600 miles unless it was seriously abused or something is out of spec.
Rich, did you recently fill up with gas and not tighten the gas cap all the way? If you fail to tighten the gas cap to three clicks, you can set off the Check Engine Light. I can always hook it up to my Snap On Scanner if you want so we can see what trouble code has been set before a trip to the dealer. If it is related to the fuel evaporative system from the gas cap, then a trip to the dealer will be wasted. I have also heard that there have been some problems with faulty oxygen sensors. If you want to check it out on my scanner one night, drop me an email.

My dealer told me of this gas cap problem, when I was buying the car... Didn't mention 3 clicks, but just said "Make sure the gas cap is on tight before you turn your car back on, or the service engine light will come on, and we would have to reset that for you..."
Personally, I think he was lying, so how would one go about resetting the light without the dealer? (just out of curiosity)

Ahh... Ya.. that sounds like it would work.. (ECU loses power, therefore losing any state information it has)...
But, out of curiosity, how does the delear do this?? they obviously don't disconnect the battery for a few hours... There has to be some sort of interface that allows them to reset, or maybe even set certain variables in the ECU?? correct??
Imagine being able to update the firmware in your car.. (like you could on say, a motherboard, digital camera, router, etc.)!! Your would always be able to have the latest bug fixes from Nissan without having to replace the entire part..!!! Just a thought..

If the problem has been fixed and the MIL is only lit because the ECU is "remembering the code" then you can reset it by disconnecting your battery for several hours. I'm not 100% sure this'll do it but at least it worked for me once before.

I wonder if they can change fuel maps and timing with the Consult II or some other "black box"?
