removing stock air filter
removing stock air filter
Has anyone tried to remove their air filter to gain extra hp for a race? I used to do it all the time with my 92 se-r with no probs. If I do it to my 2k2 I get a horrible hesitation and lack of power. Anyone know why? It's still a MAF system just like the se-r.

just want you to know with enough MAF problems we are dealing here, taking out the stock panel filter is highly not recommanded. just pay 60 bucks and get a basic intake.
Re: Why...
Removing the filter gives you the most air flow. Granted you do risk dirt and other stuff but that is what racing is about. Break it and replace it with something better. Thats my opinion. Instead of telling me what not to do let me know why it happens.

Don't know about how you approach other hobbies, but gratitously throwing away money is not what racers believe in...I mean how many pro drivers, when given the chance, 'save' their cars and engines during races/meets?
Why it happens might be directly due to the lack of a filter. Perhaps a fileter material of some kind actually helps even the flow of air out in the 'plumbing'.

Hey guy, no affense, but people who can afford to "break it and put somethign better in" are not the same people who aim for an extra 4-6hp by removing a filter, which can damage their engine. The "break it and fix it's" are the ones who broke their engine cause their stage 3 turbo overboosted or something... my $.02
