Shifting light

This may sound really lame, but i know theres products out there that are plug and play that you can hook up to your car and tell you the exact points to shift at. I mean, i can drive my freakin car, but i thought it would be cool to have a kind of teacher. anybody know what im talkin about?

thanx

Re: Shifting light

A shift light doesn't tell you the exact points to shift at. You basically set it to light up at a pre-set rpm. Unless of course i understood you wrong.

You're right! You tell a shift light when to light up. You just put in your desired RPM "pill" and it lights up everytime you hit that RPM. Some cars came out with a "shift light" that tells you when to shift based on fuel economy, but I haven't seen um for a while - I drove an RX7 that had one.

Shift Point

What he is talking about is shift points for maximunm efficency. Volkswagon Beetles used ti have shift points on the speedo, where if you shift at that rpm, you did not even need to step on the clutch.

Yep...there are products out there that are just plug and play. As in plugging in a shift light into your cig. lighter(weird). I guess it works off the electrical resistance of the car as the RPM's go up. I saw this product first hand up in Toronto, Canada at a performance car shop. Price?....over $200(Japan product)!!! I couldn't believe it. It had the capabilty of setting the shift points as well. I think I'll just stick with the other way. Wiring in a real shift light to the tach.

On my old Escort GT (don't laugh..it was back in the day) I believe the shift light was triggered by the manifold pressure, because it came on in various RPMs depending on engine load.

Re: Shifting light

I think you just want another light on your dash.

The whole idea of a 'shift light' is completely ***. Of course that's just my whiney-*** opinion.

for everyday driving, no, u really don't need a shift light...

but if you drag race or road race, having a shift light really helps...you don't need to look at your tech all the time and concentrate on the road better.
