Aftermarket Navigation Install in a 2k2

I just bought an aftermarket navigation system, and was looking at the instruction manual online. I see you have to tap into the speed detection circuit lead, which comes from the car injection computer. Can someone give me a heads up as to where this is in a 2k2, as well as what wire I should be looking for. I could figure it out eventually, but the help would be greatly appriciated.

The speed tap wire on the 2002 is behind the radio. It's a Purple with Red striped wire. It is wire number 14 on the connector. That is the wire that the Nissan factory NAV uses to detect speeds. It connects to the speedometer wire behind the speedometer, as well as to the engine.

How much, rougly, would a good shop charge to install a LCD screen flush mounted where the OEM HU is now? The control box/nav brain would be in the trunk and only the LCD screen would be visible in the car in this installation.

I saw this on the web, have no idea of the price.. but what struck me was the color and lines of the housing. Might match the interior really well. I havent seen one in person.

Its made(or marketed) by Directed Electronics

I only wonder about the roundish design of it. Looks real pretty though.

I still wonder the feasibility of transplanting an OEM Nav system, but many people, *ahem...Tim...ahem*, have answered that for me saying it isn't to practical.

if you..

found a total in a yard and they didnt nickle and dime you for every box you needed, then its possible.

given that aftermarket is $3-4K, maybe you could get an OEM cheaper.

still doesnt answer what you'd do with your Climate controls

Well arent the 2002s climated controls integrated into the nav unit? Also, I'd get into the whole Bose system in a non-Bose car fiasco. I'd LOVE to do it, but I guess I just need to sit down with a FSM and consider the feasibility.

Studman, there is no puple wire with red stripe behind my head unit. The only purple wire has silver markings on it. Could it be different/somewhere else because I don't have the bose/nav, I just had the stock radio?

95emerald...it says it has a composite A/V input, so I assume you can hook up something like a ps2 in that input.

I would NEVER buy another car without NAVI in it! I have used it 40times in the past few months... Going to the shore, taking alternate routes, country roads all the way!... Yesterday got up to 115mph on one of those backroads... no cops.... just beautiful! The best part about it - you avoid all the traffic on the "well known" routes! My friends are completely amazed!!! A normal shore trip would be about 2hours on a Sunday, due to traffic... Yesterday I did it in 1hr, 15min door to shore!

My Navi really pulls through when traffic is hellish! I remember driving to NYC in Feb... ended up in Brooklyn trying to cross over to Manhattan... traffic was STOPPED for miles, cause the Holland tunnel was closed. (due to 9/11)

I get off at Holland tunnel exit, & the officer tells me that I can't get through so I get on the side street, shoot in my coordinates & BOOM, it drops me on the same congested highway, but right AFTER all of the traffic merged from like 7-lanes into 1.... I was crossing the bridge within 5-minutes. I had a big phat smile on my face!

ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY NAVI!!!!

how do you tell the Navi to give you alternate routes?, how does it know where there is traffic and where there isnt

even if...

you dont want to drop $2000, try a Garmin Street Pilot or a V.

http://www.garmin.com/mobile/products.html#automotive

Love my GPS V. Get off the path, it auto calculates in about 10-15 secs depending on the length of the route. It knows one way streets and turns that you cant take. overall its great.

Still, I'd like a screen too, so I'm still eyeing the indash nav. Either way, I wont drive without it now..

well I got the Navigation unit it, and it is awesome. I went and had it installed, because I just didn't want to mess anything up ,and make sure it was done right. The place I took it however didn't have a dash kit in stock for my car, so they had to order it. When I get that installed, I will post pics, I promise!
As far as traffic goes, there is an extra piece and service you can get that monitors traffic and can alert you 40 miles in advance..I may go for it, I think it is worth it.
