5.9 R/T vs my 2002 automagic maxima

Im driving home last night and this guy flies by me in a 5.9 R/T, So I figure Ill catch up to him and see how my max will do against hime. Be honest I expected to loos to that car but what the hell. We hit like 4 red lightst but every time he was in the right lane and I had one car in front of me. So finally at a fourth light we lign up.I know he wants to race cause he saw me following him and kept on taking off at each light. Light turns green and I step on it. I was manually shifting my car and by the time I hit third I was already 1 1/2 cars ahead of him I shift into third and keep on pulling on him I shot it down at 90 and flashed my hazards. I slam on my breaks since it was a 35 mph street, but he keeps on going ad flies by me, giving me a dirty look as he passes. All I did was smile when he looked at me, he seemed ****ed off. Here goes another kill that I didnt expect, anybody knows the 1/4 times for 5.9 R/T??

There's the Dodge Durango 5.9 R/T, also the Dodge Dakota 5.9 R/T. And that 5.9 engine is in the 1998 Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited too. Am I missing anything?

they are fast - for a truck. bout the only faster truck than those 5.9 r/t dakotas is the ford lightning or the old gmc cyclone...

It was a lil pickup truck Dodge Dakota, with guages, clear lights and nice rims, it was all pimped out. I figured with a 5.9 litre that car should surely smoke my max but I guess not

That Dodge 5.9 liter is probably the oldest engine design still being used in the U.S. It dates to the 60's, and it has a pretty low specific output. Only 250 horsepower for an engine that size is not very impressive (yes, our 3.5 has more power). Word is, though, Dodge is planning to replace it with a smaller hemi engine, which should have in the range of 300-350 horsepower. Put that in a Dakota, and the Lightnings will have to look out.

The 5.9 R/T's have pretty good low-end but they really are a dog up on the top end. It's nice to know that you had him from the start though (being that would be the part he would have the best crack at you).

Those things are pretty quick, but I think the new engine in the 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland edition is better. It puts out 260hp, crazy torque, and it's a 4.7L I believe, so much lighter.

Just so happens that I had a Dakota R/T. Bought it new in 98 and just kept it in the garage and used it on nice days and car shows.
They only made 250 reg.cab R/T's in 1998 so I was going to keep it for awhile.....that was until they stared buying them all back (if you wanted )because they changed the towing capacity from 6800lbs to 2000lbs. Even if you had n2o or a supercharger they would pay you for it if you had the bills. I had it for 2 yrs and they gave me every lease payment back. I took it to the track a few time and ran a 15.2@89mph for a best. There were a few guys that were around 14.5 - 15 stock. nitrous guys were in the 13's.
They were a pig on gas and only got 250hp out of a 5.9 litre...it was a nice truck though I even had the frame waxed

That's some cool info man. If you don't mind my asking, why did they want to buy them back exactly? Did they not want people noticing that their older trucks were more capable than the newer ones, or something else?

They didn't really want to buy them back but there were class action law suits filed against them. They were doing out of court deals with people and having them sign that they agreed to the 2000lb capacity. These people had to sign secrecy agreements on what they got from Chrysler (as in how much money). They started getting so many complaints that they made a blanket offer that was sent to all owners you had 3 choices
1./extended warranty
2./$750 in mopar parts
3./buyback of vehicle

They wouldn't say what the problem with it was and they wouldn't compensate with cash.
Just that there was a possibility of catastophic falure of the rear frame section.
I had more fights with Chrysler Canada because I wanted $3000 cash and keep the truck as they gave a few people in the United States but they just said "that is not one of your options please pick 1/2/3 thanks for calling"
I figured that they wouldn't be worth much in the resale dept. since if anyone wanted to tow it was about the same capacity as a neon.
