Watch out for S60

Ok here is the deal. I'm cruising down I87 at about 90. I see this Volvo that I passed couple miles back flying behind me so I say what the hell. I pounch it and I;m going like 110 and he's right on my ***. So I say let me pull over on the right side and have him pull up next to me. So we're both cruising around 90 and I looke at him and tell him let's go at it. Wanted to teach him alesson but he whooped my ***. He had a Volvo S60 T5. I looked up some infdo on the car and it;s a 2.3L 247 HP engine but it comes stock with Manual. So got my *** spanked by 2 car lengths. Do you guys think he killed me because it was manual and my car is Auto. Can I get some input on this.

Not if he upgraded the turbo. Any signs pointing to this?

Stock, the S60's aren't that fast but they are probably on par with a 2k2 Auto.

Like most turbo's, extra ponies are only a chip away however.

Yeah, he probably had an upgrade of some sort. A simple pulley for more boost and he has you...especially since you have the auto. Otherwise, I'd have to think it would be a lot closer.

Volvo is coming out with 300hp "R" models to compete with Audi and BMW's special vehicles. (M3's, S4's, etc)

I cant see how that car stock would beat a 2K2 auto. Like you guys have said, stock turbos, and SC'are are a pulley away from unlocking some good HP gains.... Did you hear any signs of an upgrade ? .. On that GTP video , You could hear the pulley upgrade !

Those Volvos are so easily modified, a simple ECU swap gives them 280hp and 300ft/lb torque.

The 2K2 auto VS the 2K2 6 speed is not as much a difference as the previous 5th gens.. there are 2K2 autos running 14.4's.....

I would say you ran a rare T5 Manual. The S60 T5 only weighs 3150 and has 247 hp and 243 ft/lbs from 2400-5200. I remember seeing some numbers for the car a while back and they were quick, but what impressed me was the trap speed.

...and trap speed tells you a lot more about overall speed of the vehicle (for highway races anyhow).

I would think stock for stock a 2k2 should be ok with the volvo...but gearing might have something to do with it as well...also nissan's 250hp is less conservative than volvo's 247hp rating. (I've noticed that nissan tends to find extra HP when needed for marketing)

I remember road and track did a review on one of the turbo Volvos recently.. The 1/4 mile times were something like 14.8mph @ 98mph if i remember correctly.. It was just awesome trap speeds. Those turbos generate a lot of top end power.

I'm wondering - w/ your auto, were you shifted using the L,2,3,D, or just leaving it at D? if you let it hang at 3 for awhile you might let the revs build higher for your 4th gear, maybe helping you later on.

my area's been having camaro SS's now as highway patrols, all dressed in white. I swear if it weren't for some coppish details (like... the logo and the top lights) i would mistake it for another piece of crap too heavy of a 2 door car and get cited for it.

but i used to drive a 91 v6 camry and my friend's old old OLD OLD VERY OLD 740 DL can overtake me after i dust him from 0-125... go fig, it's got some high gearing, those volvos

The trap speeds on 2k2 autos are low. On the highway a stock 5spd T5 would rip a 2k2 auto max. He experienced it first hand!

The Volvo T5 engine (began life in the '94 850 Turbo)has great high end power. The 850T I had would run neck and neck with my 2k2 above 90 mph. Under 90 though the 2k2 would walk on it. It seems you raced him right where he is the strongest. I have no doubt that he was stock and walked you like that. From a standstill or a slow roll you would have beaten him but not by much.

Your speedos may have been screwed up . My 1990 740 GL(same engine, unless your friend had the 16 valve motor) topped out at 116 MPH. My frineds 760 Turbo topped out at 131 MPH.

The S60 5spd would give any stock or slitely modded max a good run for it's money in a 100+ MPH race. Those cars really get going once they get over 40 MPH. Stock they trap out at 99 MPH in the 1/4.

From a dead stop any well driven 2002 would take one.

Anybody remember the Motor Trend comparison several years ago? It was testing out a red (then-new) 850T5R wagon against a red Ferrari of some kind. And the numbers weren't that far off. It really amazed me.

I, being an owner of an S70 T5 auto and a 2k2 SE auto, feel like I have to chime in.

I have to admit, the T5 feels alot more powerful up top than the VQ. I would say, auto to auto, the T5 should walk on the SE from 50mph. And if it's cold out, forget it.

But from a stop, the SE should stomp the Volvo until 50-65, depending on the weather and if the turbo 5 cylinder has been idling in traffic (read: slow spool up).

Too heavy? Those things will do very low 13's STOCK. Trap speeds are over 100 MPH. Have you ever driven one? They don't feel heavy to me...especially when the tires break loose in gears 1,2, and 3.

My friend at work has a 2k S6 & he's had millions of problems with it!!! He mentioned like 20-different problems (some serious) right off the top of his head! Changed transmission twice!!! Everything under warranty, but the car is ALWAYS at the dealer! Maybe the mechanics break it so they can keep it & drive it on weekends?...

Anywayz, mabye next time you'll be licky & the S6 transmission will blow to pieces!!! Then you'll be talking about your kill.

Yeah, those things do trap at 97-98mph vs the 2K2 Max's 93mph (at least in my case). Boost (if not gearing) works wonders. Sidebar: I'm anxious to see the VQ35DETT alleged to appear in the G35 Coupe for the 2004 model year.

Do not under estimate Camaro SS's whether they be stock or cop cars they are quick cars! and easy to modify i..e..engine components.

i have to agree with you here...a friend of mine has an s60 t5, and that thing really hustles in higher rpms. i would expect it to beat a 2k2 auto from a high speed roll. almost had a heart attack though when i was driving it and had to make a quick left across oncoming traffic...not used to turbo lag!!

Yeah, and on a hot day, with the AC on, lag is horrible. You can be crossing the street and for a second, think "holy crap, I think I'm going to get hit!" while the pedal is on the floor! And then one more second later, the turbo hits, the tires break loose and your clear...but not by much. Those incidents make me glad the Max has the big V6. Cause when I romp it, it goes.

I am sorry to burst your bubble but teh Maxima just ran at a superior car. I have the utmost respect for Maxima's V6 but it is no much, either from 0-60 or while at highway speeds, for an S60 T5. That car most likely was not modified because if it were he would be even further away. The T5 has a turbocharged engine that once spooled up (see: highway speeds) not too many cars (even with superior HP) can run with it. Nice try though!!!

You just said so the Volvo S60 is aTurbocharge engine, turbo charge or S/C'd a 5th gen max and then you find out you just got a kick in the *****. I'm sure Kevin would rip off any T5 Volvo.

That was a nice try.

Oh, I forgot what is the best 1/4 mile time for a S60 with the T5 ? I will just recall you guys that we have some bros on this forum that run in the 12s and maybe even lower ( what's turbo 97 best time ? with near 400 hp)

Cheers

EXACTLY, chief! The T5 is a TURBOCHARGED stock 2.3l (read: two point three liter) 5-cyl. engine vs. a larger displacement V6 ebgine that the Maxima has.

A STOCK turbocharged engine is not considered MODIFIED. Do your modifications on the Maxima engine and then let's modify (to keep comparing apples to apples) the T5 engine and let's ee who comes up on top.

That was a nice try.
It was an intelligent try, based on facts. It is not my fault that the Maxima's engine is not turbocharged. And let's not be sore losers...if my T5 got smoked by a BMW M3, then I would gracefully admit it!

GrecianVolvo, you might want to tone it down a little bit on the Maxima flaming. Remember that this is OUR board. What do you run in the 1/4 mile?

seriously, you shouldn't talk like that, you're only asking for a flame war. fact is, stock to stock, a the t5 may outrun an auto 2k2 max, but put it up against a 6 spd, and the volvo won't stand much of a chance. stock 6 speeds are running mid 14's consistently and dip into the low 14's.
